Afghan conflict may escalate after US attacks MAHENDRA VED TIMES NEWS NETWORK EW DELHI: Following the terrorist attacks in the US, the Taliban regime in Kabul has come under pressure -- despite denial of any involvement -- for playing host to Saudi militant Osama bin Laden, who the US suspects masterminded the attacks. The Afghan conflict may take a different turn if the United Nations, which has imposed economic sanctions on the Taliban, deems it necessary to take sterner measures, which may include a military role like it did in Yugoslavia. If that happens, Pakistan, which is a ``frontline'' state in the Afghan resistance against the erstwhile Soviet Union, may also come under pressure for supporting the Taliban.
