UPS NETWORK OPERATING
Air Packages Moving Through Ground System
UPS said today its ground network is operating in a normal fashion and has expanded to handle many of the express packages that typically would move by air.
Deliveries and pickups are occurring, and ground and air packages are being accepted and moved as expeditiously as possible using UPS's extensive, integrated transportation network. Service has been restored to Washington, D.C., but deliveries continue to be limited in parts of Manhattan.
The UPS air operation was closed Tuesday night and will remain closed until the Federal Aviation Administration reopens the skies. The company is eager to resume air operations and, pursuant to the FAA's authorization, plans to reposition some aircraft soon.
UPS is working with its customers to help them understand their shipping options. But in general, the ground system is operating normally and express packages now are being moved on the ground where possible. Some air express packages destined for longer distances are being held in anticipation of air restrictions being lifted.
"Our first concern is the safety of UPS employees and the safety of our nation," said UPS Chairman and CEO Jim Kelly. "If the federal government believes the air system should remain closed for now, then we will simply continue to use our ground network. And in fact, the majority of the air packages received by UPS Tuesday are moving toward their destinations today through the ground network under our contingency plans."
Outside the United States, UPS is operating close to normal within the various regions of the world. With the exception of packages moving to and from Canada, which are being transported via the ground network, packages are not moving into or out of the United States at the moment.
On disaster relief efforts, Kelly said UPS already is working with federal and national relief organizations as well as community leaders to coordinate the movement of supplies. Individuals interested in assisting should contact those organizations, such as the American Red Cross and United Way of America.
"We all were shocked and saddened at the tragic events that took place Tuesday in New York, Washington, D.C., and western Pennsylvania," Kelly concluded. "Thankfully, all UPS employees in the affected areas have been accounted for and are safe. But our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of those touched by this terrible disaster."

All FedEx companies are operating as normally as possible given the tragic events that took place in New York, Washington DC and Pennsylvania on Tuesday. It is too early to predict when service will return to normal.
Our goal is to keep customers' shipments moving as quickly as possible and we have expanded our trucking network while we transition our aircraft as part of our contingency plans for FedEx Express. It is likely that many FedEx Express shipments will be delayed a minimum of 24 to 48 hours, and the FedEx Express Money Back Guarantee will remain suspended until normal operations resume. FedEx Ground shipments are delayed in affected areas.
FedEx Express air and ground operations within Asia, Europe and parts of Latin America are currently operating. However, no transborder operations between the U.S., Canada and Mexico are occurring at present, and our flights to and from the U.S. will be reinstated when permitted by the FAA.
FedEx Express and FedEx Ground are making pickups and deliveries where access is not restricted. We are unable to predict when services to and from Manhattan will be provided.
FedEx is cooperating fully with government authorities.
