Well, at least it's late. Even if the threat turns out to be real, there can't be too many people in the building.

Yes, so if another 100 story buildings gets knocked to the ground, no big deal?

It's past ten o'clock at night. That authorities would do something this drastic when many people are going to bed suggests that the threat must be for real.

I hope it is not foundation problems. I just read on another thread that manhattan has granite bedrock...this transmits shock very well.

I grew up in the Bronx, and I think I remember hearing that the ESB was one of the few skyscrapers with a wooden frame rather than steel. I don't know if that would be better or worse for the surrounding buildings in a worse case situation.

These copy-cat crimes by nuts coming out of the woodwork will eventually end when more time separates us from the WTC they feed upon.

Some may already be cremated.

My daughter's boyfriend, who's with a NJ fire company, is in Queens, and shuttling back into NJ to bring up fire equipment to replace the equipment that's been destroyed. Other firefighters in the region are coming in or are already there (and once he gets the equipment up, he's going in).

She says in an e-mail to me, "the reason you keep seeing NYFD personnel wandering aimlessly around the perimeter on tv? well, all their USAR (Urban Search and Rescue) and Heavy Rescue teams were in the towers when they collapsed (or within the collapse zone). the NYFD people best qualified to find people in the rubble are... under all the rubble. (the national USAR response was mobilized yesterday, but they have to procede cautiously to not add themselves to the casualty list)"

and "both people and bodies were moved by ferry and Circle Line boats (those are the ones we took to the Statue of Liberty) across the Hudson. not just Jersey City, but Hoboken, Bayonne, Liberty State Park."

It's bad.

Well, that makes sense then. It looks like power has been turned back on, which explains why another evacuation and the gas leak earlier.

Lots of Bronx natives here tonight. I grew up there myself. My recollection is also that the Empire State Building has a steel frame, and I heard that it did on C-SPAN the other day, and I read in the Blue Guide to New York that the building's structure includes "enough steel to build a double-track railroad from New York to Baltimore (187 miles)."
