#5 has the answer. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and before noon on Saturdays are typically the lowest number of daytime passengers. Not unusual to have below 50% on some flights. Also school vacations now over.

I understand that these days may see the lightest traffic, but I'm still suspicious of the fact that they found four flights that were so empty. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems improbable that they would pick four flights that were a quarter to half full by random chance. I hope that they are investigating the idea at least.

I think they picked the flights with the fewest passengers because it meant taking them over was much easier. And given that a full flight meant taking the chance of being overpowered by an unfavorable hijacker-to-passenger ratio, it made sense for them to minimize the risk. Of course they could have decided to pool all their resources into seizing a jet at midday and then taking down the Trade Center when it was filled to capacity but that wouldn't have made as nearly a powerful statement as signalling they could stimultaneously strike several targets in rapid fire order. Let's hand it to the SOBs on one count: they caught us with our collective pants down.
