Stupid on their part -- nobody is even bothering to count at this point. Personally, I think that number is way low, but they're simply wagging their tongues in the absence of real news to report. This in the kind of crisis in which you find out which on-air personalities have brains enough to think on their feet without blathering (e.g., Jennings) about stuff like this.

I think that's a credible figure. We're looking right now at the largest act of mass murder due to a terrorist act in American history. This just about blows Oklahoma City out of the water in terms of the sheer number of casualties.

From BBC - 50K people work in WTC. Noone knows how nay were at work, or how well evacuation went between the time of the first plane strike and the collapse of the towers.

I suspect any casualty numbers are complete speculation.

I was saddened and in awe of the 58,000 plus names on the travelling Vietnam War Memorial...after years of war.

This will probably be the worst loss of life for Americans in a single day.

This must be avenged.

I heard a survivor from the 81st floor of one of the buildings. That was encouraging. But he said the carpeting was burning as he left.

Hopefully, some on the upper floors managed to get down to the lower floors before the buildings melted away.

And hopefully they were not suffocated by the dust cloud.

Terror is a guy driving a car bomb into a building or shooting up a schoolyard. War is a coordinated attack. This is not terror; this is war. We need to respond accordingly.

I believe that 10,000 is a very optimistic number. Assuming that 50,000 people worked in the buildings, 10,000 dead ,means that 80% were evacuated. That seems way to high a number. Additionally, there were probably countless others who died in surrounding buildings from either the fires and/or debris. I believe that the number will be around 25,000. May God bless their souls.

I've seen figures for the of 150,000 people for the whole WTC complex, another of 50,000 workers, 70,000 visitors per day.

This is the most realistic guess I've seen yet. From what has been reported, most people in the towers were able to get out of the building with time to spare. My estimate is approximately five to six thousand deaths.

I heard someone quote historian David MacCullough (sp) saying that this was the worst loss of life from aggression on American soil since the Battle of Antietam during the Civil War.
