September 11, 2001 -- WASHINGTON - A grand jury in Rep. Gary Condit's California district rejected a request to investigate him for allegedly asking an ex-girlfriend to lie about their affair, it was revealed last night.
The Stanislaus County civil grand jury in Modesto sent notice of its decision to the lawyer of flight attendant Anne Marie Smith Thursday, saying it would not conduct the obstruction-of-justice investigation because it wasn't authorized to issue a criminal indictment.
