Accused secret agent held without bond Tuesday, September 11, 2001

MIAMI — An accused Cuban spy agreed Monday to be held without bond for trial on charges that he and his wife tried to infiltrate a U.S. military base and exile groups.
George Gari and his wife Marisol were indicted last month as unregistered foreign agents and reputed members of Cuba's Wasp Network, two months after the conviction of its leader and four other agents.
The couple were accused of being assigned to infiltrate the U.S. Southern Command and following the mail and moves of exile leaders in Miami before moving to Orlando a year ago.
The Garis can ask for formal bond hearings later, but the convicted spies never got out while awaiting trial, spending spent much of their in solitary confinement.
Prosecutors charge the pair were trained for several years in weapons, explosives, encryption and surveillance before moving to the Miami area about 10 years ago.
The parents of two young children are accused of spying under the code names Luis and Margot from 1991 to 1998. If convicted, they would face up to 10 years in prison.
