ROTFL!
To: Fred Mertz
I'm still awaiting more on the decision. I can't help being somewhat wary, though, given the abysmal record of the New York Diocese in particular and the AmChurch bishops in general on matters of human life.
As for the shortage of priests, it's a direct fault of the liberalizing of parishes in large part thanks to the American Bishops. I find it passing strange they've millions of dollars they can chuck at assorted leftist, secular causes -- including Saul Alinsky's "Interfaith" and IAF -- but plead poverty when it comes to closing the churches their consistent liberalism have emptied by disillusioning, confusing and alienating faithful Catholics.
They awarded TEN MILLION from this year's annual CHD shearing of the faithful. It's a sick joke.
I am not a fan of the American Bishops as a rule. It does not escape my attention that a Cardinal's letter to Rumsfeld on the subject of landmines and their current Media Campaign both PRECEDE a lengthy and sometimes ambiguously-worded discussion of ESCR at the nccbuscc site. I trust I'll be forgiven for what I think is justifiable wariness and outright disobedience where they are concerned but we've officially been at odds since my first editorial on their pastoral letter on nuclear arms.

Let me answer your question with a short story.
At the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, The Who was scheduled to perform right after Jimi Hendrix, but they refused to because they knew they could not outdo his rock histrionics. No one wanted to follow him, as a matter of fact.
