Northern California's Judicial Advisory Committee -- a bipartisan committee born of political necessity -- soon will begin reviewing candidates for a single federal judgeship.
The vacancy occurred when U.S. District Judge Charles Legge of San Francisco retired June 30. Federal judges serve lifetime terms presiding over criminal and civil cases of all kinds; their rulings can set precedents for nine states -- if the rulings are upheld by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
