Brokaw's...Lost Boys...

Posted on 09/10/2001 1:31:51 PM PDT by robnoel

I watched with amusement at last nite's Brokaw's "Lost Boys" ....last time I checked if I referred to a black as a "boy" I would be called a racist....I guess liberals can get away with it....I actually thought there would be a outcry from Jesse and the NAACP this morning ...but nothing....what made this story even more amazing was how these so called "lost boys" are now dealing with western culture...

LOST BOYS Cindy Koser is one of those American sponsors. She knows she has many challenges ahead with these young men. They’re used to living in mud houses without indoor plumbing and electricity. They eat one meal a day that they cook over an open fire. “They were hungry. They were tired. They were thirsty. But what they needed more than all of that was safety, a feeling of reassurance that we’ll take you to a safe place where your life is not in danger.”“How do they cook?” says Cindy Koser. “And all of those things. How to take the shower, how to use the flush toilet. All of those things are first-time experiences.”

I only caught the last half of the show, but the 'racist' angle didn't occur to me. Not sure what age these young men were, but they did mention the fact that they had been excellent students where they came from. (I wonder if that was part of the selection process to bring them to the U.S.?)

I also got the impression that this program was operated strictly by a private (religious) charitable organization -- so I think it is great that they can assist at least some young people like this. Perhaps if the hostilities ever end in the Sudan, the education these young men obtain in the U.S. will be useful in rebuilding their homeland when they return.

The one thing that did bother me was the liberal implication that the U.S should DO something to end the hostilities. They never said what, but it looks like a quagmire to me:

Sudan Military dictatorships promulgating an Islamic government have mostly run the country since independence from the UK in 1956. Over the past two decades, a civil war pitting black Christians and animists in the south against the Arab-Muslims of the north has cost at least 1.5 million lives in war and famine-related deaths, as well as the displacement of millions of others.
I'd love to see peace restored and an end to the suffering. But the truth is, we are usually totally inept at resolving these types of conflicts. If we declare war on one side or the other, we can usually win. But sticking our nose between two warring factions just gets it bloodied from both sides.
