While Southwest Florida reels from news that yet another mother is accused of killing her child, a handful of doctors and researchers say the link to antidepressant drugs cannot be ignored.

Leslie Wallace, 39, of North Fort Myers, is one of a startling number of people whose unexpected acts of violence are being correlated to depression and the drugs prescribed to curb it.

Of course, when you go on a killing rampage after taking something the govt has banned, its "drug related" and one more reason to support the WOD.

“Depression is horrible and people suffer terribly, but the advent of antidepressants have helped them work through things,” Kantor said. “It’s a godsend.”

It sure seems like the number of depressed people has skyrocketed since the early seventies. Now everyone with PMS is supposed to take pink prosac pills. But since this is a corporation doing this, it is ok. I must be paranoid to think that they are pushing these drugs on people who don't need them under very loosely supervised situations.

That should read "to support the war on drugs and ban guns!"

This is an odd conclusion... perhaps there is a link between this type of behavior and depression?

Nearly every mass killer since the Stockton Playground Massacre has been on these drugs. We haven't heard about the status of the last two yet but I will bet there is a link. The Russian guy seemed to have a long history of violence before this happened so he may an exception.

WOW! What a bunch of geniuses! The rest of us figured this out years ago with drugs like Ritalin. I guess now that the funding for the genuises grants have run out from these same drug companies...they are citing the true findings....that these drugs are not monitored correctly and certainly are not safe for most human consumption.

At it again, I see.

Everytime I see one of these goofy articles I start looking for the Scientologists behind it. I found them again: The International Coalition for Drug Awareness has a link on their website to the So. Cal. lawyers suing Eli-Lilly:

Baum, Hedlund, Aristei, Guilford & Downey

George Murgatroyd, a founder of this firm is a Scientologist supporter and donor. The "ICDA" looks like a Scientologist front organization.

It's a scam: Of course they don't want you to send money to the big drug companies on their 'dangerous' drugs--send it to the Scientologists instead so's they can shine finny lights at you until you are all better!

Surely Freepers are smart enough to see this link--follow the money trail...

International Coalition for Drug Awareness

Have you heard of these people? To my (layman's) eye the site looks very wrong: more like a Scientology / litigation front than somewhere to learn about antidepressants.

this is just propaganda and not real research.

It's Scientologist propaganda and some are falling for it!

"the link to antidepressant drugs cannot be ignored."

I thought I was the only one noticing this. Apparently it is not a new thought. Come on FOX News; where are you?

As I frequently remind people here, I take an antidepressant (Elavil, Amitryptaline)for relief of the pain of diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

I also take a potent and dangerous anti-epileptic drug, Neurontin (gaba-Pentin), for the same reason.

Strangely I have never had the urge to murder anyone.

Drugs are tools, guns. Like fire. Like chainsaws. It is not the tool--it is how it is used, and the character of the person using it.

Probably 95% of those committing violent crime have a "Y" chromosome. Let's outlaw it! No more violence.

It's Scientologist propaganda. No one even knows if these individuals were taking these drugs at the time or if they had 'gone off their meds'

Liberals have their guns to blame irrationally and conservatives have their antidepressants to blame irrationally.

When you see it happen to somebody with your own eyes you will realize it is not propaganda. Oh, I am Roman Catholic, not a Scientologist. About the possibility of a Scientologist link I will say 2 things:

Even a broken clock is right twice a day

There are probably links to organizations I don't agree with on this sight. It doesn't invalidate what people have to say here.

With bi-polar types, there is also quite a lot of use/misuse of drugs and alcohol. Mixing up of:
1. An abnormal mind,
2. A prescribed, mind-altering drug, and
3. Drugs and/or alcohol

Can be a pretty combustible result.

Equally complicated, is when people on prescribed medications for depression, decide to stop taking the stuff. They can also get into trouble, so to say.
