WACO, Texas -- It's a bird. It's a plane. No! It's panties falling from the sky. Actually, they fell from the windows of Collins Residence Hall Wednesday night.
Years ago the tradition came alive, and sometime between then and now, it died. On Wednesday night, however, the Collins girls decided to bring it back.
At 11 p.m., a herd of chanting freshmen men rounded the turn to the Eighth Street entrance of Collins. From the windows, some girls sheepishly peeped through closed blinds, while others hung from the open window taunting the men.
Students and people from around campus gathered as word and noise of the event spread.
"We were sitting at Common Grounds and heard about it," Ruthie Lobb, an Irving junior, said. "Just standing here watching makes it look like fun. We didn't do things like that my freshman year."
The idea of panties being flung by women into a street filled with men seemed a little 'sketchy' to the stereotypical, conservative Baylor University student, but those who saw the event take place got some good laughs.
"It's like Mardi Gras came to Waco," Jennifer Baca, an Albuquerque senior, said.
While men fought over the undergarments, some girls walked down to see the action from the other side.
"I threw mine early. So, I didn't see who caught mine, but I'm sure it was a 'big' surprise to the person who caught them," Rebecca Sayres, a Shreveport, La., freshman said. "They reminded me of vultures when I looked down from my window."
The 'big surprise' came in the form of oversized undergarments that most girls purchased especially for the night.
Caroline Fischer, a Shreveport, La., senior, said her mom went to Baylor in 1964 and has spoken of the Collins tradition often. She came out to take pictures for a friend that participated.
At the end of the night, the men and women returned to their respective halls with the hope that this time around, the tradition sticks.
Cool! I think some folks will have some momentos to share with Janet (el) Reno when she comes to speak there soon.....
