Is it time to consider the possible good or bad effects of the continuing barrage of negative Economic, Political and Social news that we are subjected to everyday. There is no question that what is happening today is going to have a profound effect on the way we will live in the 21st Century. How will the people of the world respond to the Recession or Depression that is rearing its ugly head? How will the people of the US respond?

I guess what I am trying to say is can the American or global society handle a Recession or Depression.

I posted this for one reason and one reason only- The question really is can modern society survive a big recession or depression. Are we tough enough? Do most of you even comprehend what it would be like?

I figured I'd go out and buy a Bentley from a failed dot-commer for pennies on the dollar.

I don't care who says what, Bush better say or do something to turn this downtrend around.

3 years ago, I was living on $5000 per year. It was actually quite fun for a while. I can buck up when needed.

The question really is can modern society survive a big recession or depression.Of course it can.
When I notice lots of gloom and doom and folks bolting the market, that's when I get ready to get back in.
Don't forget: 5% unemployment was, for fifty years, normal.

I don't care who says what, Bush better say or do something to turn this downtrend around. Reagan couldn't talk us out of the Carter recession in 1982. Presidents can't do much except cut taxes; and who cares what they say when you've lost your job?
You really expect the government to pull America out of an economic downturn?

I think that u r on to something Bert. America would tear itself apart if we went into a long term depression. We are too spoiled and would clamor for relief. The only thing that will pull the Globalist speculators out of this one is war and they are doing their darndest to start one in the Balkans and the Middle East.

I dunno Bert, can your age bracket handle it without worrying about the SS benefits or Medicare being yanked away?
To: BubbaZanetti
Perhaps, a result of anxiety?

I figured I'd go out and buy a Bentley from a failed dot-commer for pennies on the dollar. That's known as Deflation.
In itself, deflation isn't all that bad - if you are buying and not selling. The problem comes when consumers reach the quite rational conclusion "why buy today, when things will be cheaper tomorrow?" To a demand-driven economy like ours, that can be a serious problem that takes years to correct.
I don't think we are heading toward a 30s style depression. I think the "Tokyo" scenario is much more plausible - a long, slow slide into economic stagnation.
If that scenario plays out - if the stock markets in the US languish for 10 years - much as the Nikkei has throughout the 90s - the impact on American politics will be profound. Millions of boomers who were counting on their 401k accounts to fund their retirements will be in for a rude awakening - they will have to postpone their retirements for years. These will be some mighty p***-ed folks.

I know what it would be like, A+. But I think the majority of Americans are plump, helpless sheep and will be in big trouble.

Is it time to consider the possible good or bad effects of the continuing barrage of negative Economic, Political and Social news that we are subjected to everyday. -- Possibly. --- All things must be considered at some point. Is it time? - Maybe.
There is no question that what is happening today is going to have a profound effect on the way we will live in the 21st Century.
-- Yes indeed, this is a profound guestion. 21st century life could be in the balance.
How will the people of the world respond to the Recession or Depression that is rearing its ugly head?
-- Badly, no doubt. This younger generation is hopeless, as my granny use to say.
How will the people of the US respond?
-- Even worse. - Yep A+Bert, think you've nailed it this time.
I guess what I am trying to say is can the American or global society handle a Recession or Depression.
Why try? Why not just ask? -- Use a question mark Bert, they're cheap.

My kind can handle just about anything except, you guessed it Social Security cuts. Meanwhile can your crowd get along without the TV circuses?

The Fed and the IMF and Keyenesians have a big job ahead of them. How to control a recession in the U.S.

I find many of the people I meet do not have the slightest idea how the system works. It might even be too late for them to learn.
