BOULDER, Colo. (Reuters) - Police have obtained the name of a person who allegedly admitted on an Internet bulletin board that he witnessed the 1996 murder of child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey, a spokeswoman said on Saturday.

``It would be our fondest wish'' if the lead helped police solve the murder of the 6-year-old girl, Boulder Police Department spokeswoman Jana Petersen said.

Petersen said the person who posted the message on a Web site devoted to JonBenet may have wanted to get off his chest the fact that he witnessed the crime and never told police.

But she said it could also be another false lead in the nearly 5-year-old investigation of the murder of the girl who was found beaten and strangled in the basement of the family's home in Boulder on Dec. 26, 1996.

``This may be just one of many different kinds of tips, no more or less important, that have not panned out,'' Petersen said.

The spokeswoman declined to disclose any other details or say whether police had already spoken to the person who posted the message in early August, around the time of what would have been JonBenet's 11th birthday on Aug 6.

The Washington Post reported on Saturday that police, acting on an e-mail tip, found the Aug. 7 message, which said, ''I feel so guilty for what I've.Done. I was there when the whole thing occurred.''

The message said the alleged murderer was a man who worked as a handy man in the Ramsey home and who had a key, the Post said.

``I never wanted any part in it, but they said if I didn't help I would be killed as well. I was only 14 when this took place, so I went along with the whole plan,'' the message continued. ``...I just wanted you all to know so you all know that the parents had nothing to do with it. To everyone out there still concerned...I'm sorry.''

Police got the name of the purported witness after authorities in Loudoun County, Virginia, carried out a search warrant this week of customer records of AOL Time Warner Inc.'s America Online .

Boulder police heard about the admission from a woman who keeps a Web site on JonBenet. The girl's life as a little beauty queen and murder have inspired several books and hours of discussion on talk radio and television programs.

Soon after the slaying attention was focused on the girl's parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, who have denied any connection with their daughter's murder and have criticized the police investigation. No arrests have been made and police have said her parents remain under suspicion.

I just wanted you all to know so you all know that the parents had nothing to do with it

Oh, of course. You'll understand if I think maybe the AOL message was planted by or on behalf of a certain former Miss West Virginia.

``I never wanted any part in it, but they said if I didn't help I would be killed as well. I was only 14 when this took place, so I went along with the whole plan,''

This sounds more like Mama Ramsey's rambling ransom note......

The Jeffery MacDonald murder case and the Ramsey case have at least this much in common- the absolute and unforgivable incompetence of the first police agency on the scene destroyed any chance of bringing the murderer to justice. In the MacDonald case. it was the Fort Bragg Military Police (MP's)- they are pretty good at guarding the gate to make sure no-one gets out without a duly signed "pass", but investigating a murder was a real stretch for them. (A stretch too far, it appears).

The same is true of the Boulder police- I watched an interview with the female "detective" who was on the scene, and it was just pitiful. This moronic woman actually believed that she could do the job of a homicide detective- when she should have never have gotten beyond guarding school crossings!

I attribute this false belief to the effects of 20 years of feminist propaganda.

This sure sounds like the Ramsey's making another feeble-minded attempt to sway the court of public opinion.

IMHO they care more for the buck than they do about JonBenet, their daughter.

"IMHO, They care more about the buck than they do for JonBenet, their daughter".

Well, yes, they probably didn't care about HER all that much, now did they? Seeing that one of them murdered her, and the other is standing behind her (stupid moron "ransom note" and all).

Yes, I'm pretty sure about who killed this kid- and it wasn't any "handyman" or random bum off the street who "just happened" to sneak into the house, grab the kid from her upstairs room, murder her, and hide her body (WHY?) after writing the stupidest "ransom note" ever seen in history, and then get away clean without waking ANYONE or leaving a trace.

This is a scenario only the mentally-challenged could accept. Fortunately for the Ramsey's, there are a LOT of really, really stupid people out there. (Remember that 43% of voters chose Clinton- probably more like 98% in Boulder- need I say more?).

If I showed that kind of incompetence at work I would be fired and I don't even do anything that could be construed as important.
