Sen. Danforth Was MIA When Bush Needed Him
Former Republican Senator Jack Danforth can kiss the Supreme Court goodbye.
Danforth has long been touted as one of Bush's possible nominees to fill any Supreme Court vacancies.
Previously, Bush had seriously considered the moderate Republican as his vice presidential running mate.
In his new book "The Accidental President," David Kaplan reports that Danforth was missing in action when Bush's campaign sent out an urgent 911 to him.
Kaplan writes that immediately after the election Bush campaign official Don Evans asked Danforth to represent the campaign in a federal challenge to the constitutionality of the manual recount in Florida.
Danforth was vacationing with his wife in Cancun. Before he finished a second Margarita, a hostess told him he had a call. After listening to Evans, Danforth asked, "Is there a chance of us prevailing?" He then worried aloud to Evans that any lawyer filing the suit was jeopardizing his credibility.
The next morning, Evans called back and said, "We've thought about it and we want you to do this." The Bush campaign arranged to send a private plane to take Danforth to Tallahassee.
Danforth checked out of his hotel, though he remained uneasy. He decided he needed to talk to Bush himself. In his next call with Evans - with the leader of Bush's team, Jim Baker, on the line as well - Danforth said so.
Danforth assumed they'd put him right through. The phone rang, but it was Evans again "Jack," he said, "it sounds like your heart's not in this. Maybe it's best for you not to do it. Have a nice vacation."
As it turned out, a real Bush loyalist, James Baker, took the job - and did a masterful job.
To get the full story, read Washington Times' reporter Bill Sammon's "At Any Cost: How Al Gore Tried to Steal the Election," which details how the media and the Gore campaign cost Bush 10,000 votes in Florida by having the results called before polling had finished.

Danforth didn't want to do it. So what?
As it turned out, it was the right decision, for both Bush and Danforth.
Danforth is independently wealthy, and was just named special envoy to Sudan.
Sounds like Bush still has some level of confidence in him.
Your "Skull and Bones" blather is stupid.
ROTFLMAO! Indeed, your sarcasm is well placed. Point Proven. Silly Sinkspur, I suppose you just don't get it. Confidence in being appointed to Sudan...the HELLHOLE? Blather indeed...but not from me.
Danforth is as you say. Only thing he ever did worthwhile was Clarance Thomas--but that was only because he had a personal connection to Thonas as his former employer. Danforth was also in on the Souter stealth operation to slip a lefty past Bush GHW for the Supreme Court. It was absurd of the Bush campaign to even turn to Danforth after the election. His "heart isn't in it" puts it exactly right. He would have failed just as he intended to fail on the "investigation" Clinton got him to front for. He is just a tool. That there was an element in the Bush campaign that turned to him actually reveals th eproblematic side of the present White House. There are these types in there having a voice. That's the part of your point in decrying the value in electing GW anyway.
No. That's too much. I won't give that up at present. Just so long as he doesnt do something as stupid as his father in signing that 1991 "Civil Rights Act" which was a quota dream and which undermined more than a decade's slow progress in the Supreme Court. The father foolishly gave that as a peace offering after winning on Thomas. It is those conselors to the Bush presidents that we have to worry about.
Methinks I've identified a liberal who has resorted to typical name-calling in the absence of substantive intellectual rebuttal.....
Methinks I've found someone who thinks there IS substantive rebuttal to the "Skull and Bones" foolishness.
It's blather.
Methinks your analysis is incorrect.
Well, jerkweed, we'll see how important Sudan is in the scheme of things. One of us will be right.
But Danfourth is a born-rich country club republican just like Bush who doesn't care for our people and won't do anything for them. Typical Country Clubber response he gave down in Cancun, he said that if he doesn't have strong assurances of success he won't participate, that is not the type of a mentality we need in our leaders. That is how all the Country Club Republicans, including Bush, think. They're not willing to fight for what's right, therefore, they will not achieve anything.
Methinks your analysis is incorrect."
Sphincter did indeed say "you are stupid". By inferring that the poster said something stupid, he inferred that the poster was stupid. It's called logic. Then again, I guess it all depends on how you define the word "said." In other words, Clintonspeak, tortured fracturing and "parsing" of a statement which intent is clearly self evident to the rational.
FWIW, I happen to agree that Skull and Bones is blatantly illogical and arrogant, but if these namby-pamby elitists wish to make fools of themselves with their exclusionary exercises, it's their business, at least until their old-boy crap is proven to harm others or their careers.
If your screen handle is accurate you really shouldn't be defending name-calling, or as you present it, objectionable editorial remarks aimed at someone's opinion....
But in any case he'd be a terrible Supreme Court Justice.
