Nigeria calls out army to quell Muslim-Christian violence in northern city

LAGOS, Nigeria, Sept. 8 — President Olusegun Obasanjo called out the army Saturday to combat Muslim-Christian violence raging in a northern Nigerian city, where terrified residents told of churches and homes burned and bodies piling up in the streets.

Authorities imposed a dawn-to-dusk curfew to quell the fighting, which erupted Friday night at the time of Muslim prayers — some said, when a Christian woman angered Muslims by trying to cross a street where Muslim men were praying.
One young man in Jos said he was part of a mob of Christians who killed 10 people and set their bodies on fire. He spoke by telephone on condition of anonymity.
'''Are you Christian or Muslim?''' the youth said, recounting the question he said he and others in the mob asked passers-by. When the answer was Muslim, he said they fell upon their victims with knives, machetes and sticks.
There was no clear word on the death toll so far in Jos, a hilltop city of 4 million some 620 miles northeast of Nigeria's commercial capital of Lagos.
But residents cowering in homes with their families Saturday spoke of seeing dozens dead — and the bloodletting continuing.
''It just started raining — so I looked outside, and saw three corpses lying in front of my house,'' one woman, Susan Akele, told The Associated Press by telephone. ''This is hell.''
Obasanjo authorized deployment of the army and went on state radio to appeal to religious and community leaders to calm their followers.
''I wonder what sort of Muslims and Christians start burning churches and mosques — places where God is worshipped,'' Obasanjo said.
''True believers in God cannot start killing other human beings.''
The explosion of violence is the latest since the introduction of Sharia, or Islamic law, in several northern states last year sparked bloody clashes between Christians and Muslims. Hundreds have died.
Nigeria, with 120 million people, is Africa's most populous nation. It is divided into predominantly Christian south and overwhelmingly Muslim north.
Northerners dominate Nigeria's military, and wielded immense power during the 15 years of army rule, which ended in 1999 with Obasanjo's election.
Jos, whose government leaders are mainly Christian, has rejected the possibility of implementing Sharia. Until now, the city had largely been spared religious and ethnic violence that has periodically wracked other parts of Nigeria.
Religious tensions in the city had been rising following the recent appointment of a Muslim politician as chairman of a state poverty-alleviation committee.
Although the combatants were divided along religious lines, witnesses said ethnicity was playing a lesser role. Large numbers of fighters on the Christian side were members of the Berom tribe, a group native to Jos. Fulanis and Hausas — two of Nigeria's largest groups — made up a large proportion of the Muslim combatants.
Some accounts said the confrontation on the street outside a mosque sparked the conflict — an argument at first, escalating into armed clashes between young Muslims and Christians.
Jos state Deputy Gov. Michael Bomang imposed a 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew Friday night in an effort to prevent further violence. The curfew was later rolled forward to begin at 4 p.m. Speaking on state radio and television, Bomang called soldiers and police into the streets.
Two churches — an Assemblies of God and Church of Christ — were burned during the rampage Friday in the mostly Muslim middle-class neighborhood of Kwararafa, the Lagos newspaper ThisDay reported.
There were unconfirmed reports of a mosque burned in the Nassarawa neighborhood where both Christians and Muslims live. Muslim-Christian fighting was also taking place in the rugged, impoverished neighborhood of Congo-Russia.
Zakar Davou, an accountant at Mountain Greens Hotel in Holwshe, a suburb of southern Jos, said he saw Christian youths setting up a makeshift roadblock, where they singled out suspected Muslims and burned their cars.
''Oh man, it is a terrible situation,'' Davou said, adding that he, a Christian, was allowed to pass unhindered.
There were also reports of looting of stores and restaurants. Major roads were blocked by youths armed with guns, machetes, clubs and other weapons, witnesses said. State hospitals were said to be filling up with wounded.
Smoke was rising from homes burning in the city, said Mary Dung, a Christian resident of a neighborhood in southern Jos.
Rival bands had split her street into Muslim side and Christian side, and were shooting it out. ''My neighbor was shot in front of my face,'' the woman said.
       ''Put us in your prayers.''

The title of this article is very mis-leading. It is not Muslim-Christian violence, but Muslim AGAINST Christian violence. The dominant media seem to bend over backwards never to offend Muslims. The Christians are being massacred by Muslims, why won't they state it clearly?

How could "when a Christian woman angered Muslims by trying to cross a street where Muslim men were praying," be sufficient grounds for any human being to want to hack to death women and children? How in the world can any religion consider this a capital offense worthy of touching off a barbaric riot? What is the offense? Crossing the wrong street? Looking at the men? Bizarre is too kindly.

But where are international Muslims screaming condemnation? How many Mullahs do you hear repudiating their co-religionists? Have you read in your local newspapers that American Muslims are distancing themselves from this disgraceful behavior? In Europe? In the Arab nations? In Iran, Pakistan, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Malaysia? Anywhere? How about the UN Conference in Durban?

Moreover how come Christian International Organizations are not standing up and screaming in protest in defense of their co-religionists? Why the international silence? The story gets reported once, twice, and then everyone forgets about it. WHY?

Uh, Sorry but you didn't even read your own article... the whole area this is happening in is predominantly Christian.

"One young man in Jos said he was part of a mob of Christians who killed 10 people and set their bodies on fire. He spoke by telephone on condition of anonymity.
'''Are you Christian or Muslim?''' the youth said, recounting the question he said he and others in the mob asked passers-by. When the answer was Muslim, he said they fell upon their victims with knives, machetes and sticks."

It began with Muslim attacks on CHristians, and THEN the Christians reacted in defense.
