Israeli ministers call on Peres not to meet Arafat after attacks
JERUSALEM, Sept 9 (AFP) -
Israeli ministers called Sunday to cancel a proposed meeting between Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat after suicide bombings rocked Israel, a newspaper said.
The Haaretz daily, quoting diplomatic sources on its website, said that hardline Public Security Minister Uzi Landau and minister without portfolio Danny Naveh had both called on Peres not to meet Arafat.
Two Palestinians and five Israelis were killed in Palestinian attacks Sunday, and Israel retaliated with missile strikes on two offices of Arafat's Fatah movement and a key base of the Palestinian forces in the West Bank.
In the worst incident at Nahariya, a bomber blew himself up as passengers were pouring off a train that had just arrived from Tel Aviv, killing three other people and wounding 36.
At the Beit Lid crossroads, the bomber killed himself and wounded three people in a powerful explosion that left four cars and a bus in flames.
Earlier at Jiftlik, north of Jericho in the West Bank, an Israeli teacher and driver were killed and three teachers wounded, when Palestinians opened fire on a school bus.
Haaretz quoted sources in Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's office saying after the attacks that, while Arafat might have been expected to rein in the violence ahead of a meeting with Peres, he was doing the exact opposite.
In Cairo, where a Palestinian decision is expected Sunday on whether Arafat will met Peres, Palestinian cabinet minister Nabil Shaath also put doubt on an imminent meering.
No date or venue will be set until "we're sure preparations have reached a point where there is a real mandate" from Sharon for Peres, he said.
Peres said earlier Sunday there should be no preconditions for the talks with Arafat aimed at forging a truce to end the bloodshed that has left more than 760 people dead since last September.
"This meeting must take place without preconditions, because it is impossible to negotiate when there are conditions," he told Israeli public radio.
Peres said Friday he planned to meet with Arafat three times between next week and the end of the month to seek an end to Israeli-Palestinian violence.
But US officials said the dovish Israeli minister, who shared the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize with Arafat for interim peace accords, may have been over-optimistic about the timing of such a meeting.
And you are putting it kindly.

Thanks for the links, newsperson999, really do appreciate it...Please, can you help publicize this? Don't know if you are in NY, but any help would be appreciated....
I agree with everything you wrote, except not all Jews have power and money.....I know many who don't and are on these threads....but everything you said was absolutely on target...with that one exception. I don't think it would matter if Peres was a Jew or not, he'd still be the same Socialist #$$&*^%...
All your beloved Stern Gang ever did was blow up the King David Hotel and murder Count Bernadotte. The commies in the Palmach and the Haganah did the heavy lifting.
You smear good men. They may be misguided, but they saved more Jewish lives than you ever will.
The entire book "Perfidy" describes the "heroic" founders as they protected a Nazi Jew collaborator in a libel trial and then murdered him to cover their tracks.
An interesting theory. I wasn't aware that the Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates ... (to say nothing of Iran!) had so changed their governments.
Now there's some courageous palies. Let's see now - suppose the Israelis were to strafe a school bus. That would be bad, right? But it's OK for the palies to do the same thing, 'cause they're palies. Riiiight.
Haaretz quoted sources in Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's office saying after the attacks that, while Arafat might have been expected to rein in the violence ahead of a meeting with Peres, he was doing the exact opposite.
Why should arapigfat do anything of the sort? Israel is supposed to execrcise such suicidal restraint that there is no incentive to behave in a peaceful manner. When the palies get smashed - hard - they'll start to talk peace. Until such time as they think they're strong enough to start murdering children again, anyway.
No, my friend. The "trial" has lasted a generation, and the conviction is clear.
Only the execution remains. But that will come soon enough.
The die has been cast and a bullet has been prepared for Mr. Peres, as it was for Mr. Rabin.

BTW, if you are going to bring up Hungary, what was Jabowsky doing making nice with Mussolini's minions?
The best Ben Hecht book ever are the transcripts of his short-lived WABC television show.
Onto the Peres is a traitor idea--There's a difference in being foolish, and in being a traitor. Hey, the Israeli people elected this guy, and there was no great outcry when Sharon picked Peres as foreign minister. I'm also of the 'Oslo was a Palestinian scam' frame of mind. But the Israeli people were (and are) desperate for a solution, and though Peres advocated a stupid solution, you can hardly say he was traitor for advancing a plan the electorate supported.
