Individuals, companies using ''.org'' won't be evicted, task force decides

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (AP) -- A task force established by the organization that oversees Internet addresses said Saturday that the group has no plans to restrict the use of the suffix ''.org'' to nonprofit groups.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, ICANN, had indicated in the spring that ''.org'' might eventually be limited to nonprofits, sparking fears among other users that they might be forced to abandon the suffix.

But a task force convened by ICANN -- a private group selected by the U.S. government in 1998 to oversee addressing policies for the Internet -- concluded that ''.org'' serves a role well beyond noncommercial organizations, said Milton Mueller, co-chairman of the task force.

``We remain interested in maintaining the openness of `.org' and not making it a restricted domain. There will be no -- I repeat, no -- evictions from .org for failure to meet some criteria,'' Mueller said in Montevideo, Uruguay, where ICANN is holding its quarterly meeting through Monday.

While the task force determined that marketing of the ''.org'' suffix should be targeted at nonprofits, others wishing to use ''.org'' will not be turned away, Mueller said.

Although ''.org'' is often associated with nonprofits, many individuals and companies have claimed ''.org'' names, partly because of overcrowding in ''.com.''

Since you posted this I assume you have an interest in such matters. Do you know if similar challanges have been raised in regards to ".net"?

Anyone check whether the following sites -- and ones similar them -- are taken?

www.reno.org
www.renoforgov.com
www.janetrenoforgovernor.org
www.reno2002.org

It would be delicious to see them up and running and directed to Free Republic.

Or have the domains directed to an index file with an image of a horrified Elian, and a gun barrel pressed against his nose.

Thanks. I'm swamped at work for the next 6 weeks or so but FR members, acting as individuals, should give some thought to registering the sites that haven't already been taken.
