Conservatives and the GOP: A Dysfunctional Relationship

by John Bender

The Republican convention should be a wake up call for conservatives. This isn't your party anymore. In fact, the convention is a slap across the face of conservatives. No conservative voices are being heard at this anointing of Boy George. The House managers are being hidden away. Steve Forbes is not invited to speak, nor is Dan Quayle. Just as this column was being written a rumor is circulating that Ambassador Keyes is going to be allowed to speak but we were unable to confirm that rumor with the Ambassador or his staff. Instead Colin Powell tongue lashed delegates from the podium for being against racial preferences. Rep. Kolbe an unknown congressman from Arizona will speak because he is gay. John McCain, of Keating Five fame, will speak. All in all, the convention will be treated to leftists, socialists, crooks and assorted statists. It looks like a Democrat convention.

Still, there are some who call themselves conservatives who will embrace the speakers and the party's new leftward tilt. They are like battered women who continue to return to their batterer. They just can't bear the thought of leaving their abusive situation.

No matter how often the party and Bush slap these people around, they always make excuses for them and defend them. These poor souls are in a dysfunctional relationship and are being brutalized. Boy George slapped conservatives by saying he will increase the size of the infamous Department of Education. He slapped them again by saying he will make the tax code more progressive and make the productive 20 percent who now pay 62 percent of federal taxes pay 64 percent if he is elected.

Bush also wants taxpayers to give the underachievers of the nation savings accounts. Even Gore hasn't suggested that yet. Bush wants the over taxed producers of the nation, to buy prescription drugs for the rest of the nation. These are two more slaps for conservatives who have been fighting socialism for seventy years.

Bush also wants to continue the Clinton policy of building Red China's military/industrial complex. He will continue Clinton's policy and give the butchers in Beijing Permanent Most Favored Nation status despite their horrible human rights record.

Still there are people who think of themselves as conservatives who support Boy George despite where he stands on the issues. Some of them because they are scared of Gore and some because they refuse to believe Bush is a liberal no matter what he proposes.

The most pitiful of this latter group are those who will tell you that Bush is just saying these things to get elected. They really believe Bush will govern to the Right of his campaign rhetoric.

These people get very upset when one points out that there has not been a politician in this century whoever governed to the Right of where he campaigned. They get even angrier when one points out that we are finishing eight years under a president who would say anything to get elected. They can't answer why they would want another president who does the same thing.

Other conservatives know Bush is a liberal and know they are getting the back of his hand but like the battered wife fear leaving him. They fear a third party candidate can't win so they are willing to take the abuse and vote for the lesser of two evils. There is hope for these people.

Like the battered wife who knows she is abused but is scared to leave, they will eventually get more angry than they are scared. These are the people who are going to be joining the conservatives who are already in other parties.

As the Republican Party continues to tilt farther Left and becomes ever more socialist and statist, more and more conservatives are going to get tired of being abused and leave. They will get sick of being told they have to vote Republican because the alternative is worse.

Still others will stay with the party until the small differences between the Republican Party and the Democrat Party are all gone. These are the conservatives who will accept any affront, no matter how egregious, and the people who are totally unaware of what is going on around them. These people will be there to turn out the lights when the Republican Party goes the way of the Whigs.

In the mean time, forward-looking conservatives are building the Reform Party and the Constitution Party into national conservative parties. They are preparing a place for the conservatives still stuck in the Republican Party.

The Constitution Party will be on the ballot in at least thirty-five states and may be on the ballot in as many as forty-five states. The Reform Party will be on the ballot in all fifty states.

Both parties are solidly pro-life and pro-Second Amendment. Both are for putting America first and protecting our sovereignty and borders. They are both for lower taxes and smaller government. In short they are everything the Republican Party should be but isn't.

Hopefully, most conservatives won't wait too long before they disassociate themselves with the statists and socialists who are now leading the Republican Party. The longer they stay the more they encourage the party leadership to continue their rush toward the Left.

Recently two Bush supporters called me on my assertion that there were Bush supporters on FR using the "he's only saying those things and acting moderate to get elected" line. Here, we see reference to this very argument in the editorial. There were definitely instances of FReepers parroting this argument.

Besides, this is a good time to discuss this editorial again.

You're discussing a year-old editorial.

Since then, Bush has: made John Ashcroft attorney general over the howls of the entire left, HCI, NOW, etc.; backed down the UN antigun conference; pulled out of the UN racial-guilt conference; told the Europeans to go to hell on global warming.

And you whine?

It is clear to me that it is the conservatives who are in a daze, walking around like zombies clinging on the the thread of hope that the Republicans will become leaders of a conservative agenda.

The socialists? They have the energy and the momentum.

When this country is finally lost, when the word "freedom" is no longer in the vocabulary, the blame should be put on conservatives who failed to show the outrage against their "leaders" when they had the chance.

Just look in the mirror, freepers. Your continued support of everything Bush, everything Republican, is HELPING to destroy this once great country.

Welcome to socialism--and blame yourself.

* *BASH ALERT * *

If you try to engage a Bush BASHer in debate, you will waste enormous bandwidth and get nowhere. When they cannot refute you through misdirection or other obfuscation, they will hide from you. When all else fails, Bashers will often times invoke references to "NWO", "Trilateralists", and "CFR".

Bashers are delusional, thinking ideas that attract less than 1% of the vote are winning ideas.

Bashers will bash no matter what Bush does.

Bashers will, when ignored, strike out.

Bashers have shown contempt for the owner of and posters to of this forum by returning under new names time and again,

Bashers are disruptors and distracters.

The BEST policy (based on much advice, that I unfortunately ignored one week) is to act as if he IS NOT HERE.

Even when they respond, they are here as an unwanted - and in fact banned - intruders.

Posting responses to them encourages them and others to break in and disrupt the forum, please think twice before doing so.

Year old editorials that are "pro-freedom" are a hell of a lot better than a lot of today's crap!

How about that current article "the root cause of air rage: airlines." Go read that article. Like it is going to do something to reclaim our freedom.

How about "captured shark bites fisherman" posted in News/Current Events. Is that more your style? Is that more compelling than losing your freedom?

This is FreeRepublic. You would think we could see more compelling articles like this with discussion focused on how to remain free instead of articles like "Savin Rock Musuem to Open" that was posted today.

You are insane.

You obviously did not vote for Bush. Thus, you might have stopped many Americans from getting a tax cut, which President Bush pushed for. By not voting for Bush, you only helped Al Gore.

Why don't you want Americans to get back the fruits of their labor?

Since then, Bush has: made John Ashcroft attorney general

While Bush has done some good things, I wouldn't list Ashcroft among them.

Ashcroft has shut down the campaign finance task force, sent its head, Robert Conrad, away to NC (Conrad was the fellow who told Reno to appoint an IC to investigate Gore's fundraising), will refuse to release information as to why Mark Middleton was not prosecuted.

Oh, well, it's only about corruption and the security of the nation.

"You're discussing a year-old editorial."

Is it because it's too embarrassing? Or too right on? Same difference, none.

Whoa!  Wait a minute, Mr. Irish.

Last night on  this thread, you said:

To: Rebeckie, ET(end tyranny)

One is left to wonder, after the whoppers that were told on FR about W saying one thing and doing something else after winning, did the strategy go something like this? "Let's tell the truth about our pro-big government agenda and privately have our sycophants on FR say we don't really mean it." Hmmm... brilliant, Clinton-style politics.

Since it was evident to me that you thought some Bush supporters were lying about Bush's plans for education, I asked for a link (And I never made a FALSE CHARGE, btw, I was trying to figure out if perhaps someone else had).

Since you're asking someone else for links above, got any for this statement?

194 Posted on 09/08/2001 21:10:26 PDT by Irma

Now you are offering an editorial from Ether Zone as proof of what Freepers here posted?  Hmmmm..don't think so.  Anyway, I told you it wasn't a big deal if you couldn't find the links.

Nice try, though...;-)
