TALLAHASSEE Democratic gubernatorial candidate Daryl Jones owed the IRS $135,000 at the end of last year and was shouldering some $30,000 in credit card debt, according to his annual financial disclosure forms.
The documents, released this week by the state Division of Elections, showed Jones' income was $81,000 for 2000. Jones reported stock investments totaling $75,000, down significantly from the $480,000 he reported a year earlier for 1999. He did not have any credit card debt the previous year.
The state senator from Miami said the debt was a result of his investments.
"I took a major hit in the stock market," Jones told The Miami Herald for Saturday editions. "I haven't seen anyone knocked around that badly since Muhammad Ali was in the ring."
Financial records of two other elected state officials running for governor Lois Frankel and Gov. Jeb Bush show they also lost money on investments last year.
Bush's mutual fund investments, which are held in a private trust, dropped to $1.1 million, down $170,000. Frankel's investments, totaling $1.19 million on Dec. 31, were $175,000 less than she reported the year before.
Jones said he has ironed out a payment schedule with the Internal Revenue Service and has already paid more than $35,000 toward the debt. He also said he hired a new stockbroker last year and that he has become more conservative in his investments.
Ordinary people should learn their places and not challenge media favorites.</sarcasm>
