LINDEN, Texas--A woman wanted on charges of fabricating evidence and giving false statements to investigators is expected to turn herself in to Cass County authorities over the weekend, according to a Dallas-area NAACP official.
A Cass County Jail spokesman said late Friday that deputies had not been able to locate Camille Fulton, 32, of Bivins, Texas, since warrants were issued for her Thursday morning.
"We have found her an attorney and arranged for her to meet with him," said Anthony Bond of the Irving, Texas, chapter of the National Association for Advancement of Colored People. "The plans are for the attorney to go with her to turn herself in. She has agreed to do that."
Bond said Fulton's attorney is from the local area and is familiar with the case.
"It's by the grace of God we found him," Bond said. "We talked to a lot of lawyers and some of them wanted a lot of money."
The charges--one felony and one misdemeanor--stem from an alleged Aug. 29 incident she reported to authorities. Fulton filed a report stating she was kidnapped near her home, sexually assaulted and robbed by two hooded white men. The allegations also include having the letters "KKK" carved in her chest.
Fulton, who is black, was treated at a local hospital for various injuries after she was reportedly released by her captors. She maintains she was held captive by them from about 6 p.m. Aug. 29 until about 10 a.m. Aug. 30.
Cass County authorities apparently took the allegations seriously enough to ask the FBI for help.
Earlier this week, Cass County authorities began to cast doubts on Fulton's story after it was found that the letters carved on her chest were mirror images or done by someone as they were looking into a mirror.
A county investigator and an FBI agent also obtained a signed statement from Fulton saying the she fabricated the story.
Fulton is standing by her first story, Bond said Friday.
"I have not talked to her, but I have talked to her family members who have been in touch with her. We want to ask people to pray for Camille, her family, and for the people who actually assaulted her."
I guess she never took note of those 'Ambulance' signs in her rear-view mirrors!;^)
