Mayoral candidate Tim McCormack says AFL-CIO plan would hurt Catholic schools

Video: Political issue or misunderstanding?
CLEVELAND -- Cleveland mayoral candidate Tim McCormack says he won't sign on to a workers plan he claims would hurt Catholic schools.
McCormack refused to sign the AFL-CIO workers Bill of Rights that pledges "as mayor, I will vote against public funds going to private schools."
Cleveland's Catholic schools get $14 million for programs that have nothing to do with religion.
"Tomorrow if this becomes policy you aren't going to have a school to go to because they'll shut down," said McCormack. "They cannot remain open."
The Catholic Diocese supports Unions. According to a spokesperson, "the Bishop [Anothy Pilla] is concerned about that because the Bishop is concerned about the education for all children in the City of Cleveland."
AFL-CIO boss John Ryan claims it's a big misunderstanding.
"I would hope no candidate would use the fear of the unknown and fear of something that does not exist to try and get votes," said Ryan. Ryan claims the next phrase about not supporting school vouchers is what this is all about, not routine funding.
Other Catholic candidates Mary Rose Oakar and Bill Denihan signed the Bill of Rights. Oakar did not get back to Channel 3 News. Denihan said being mayor and standing up for city schools would come before his personal beliefs.
Mayors usually don't get much say in school funding, but in this close, confusing race, all candidates are looking for an issue to break out from the pack.
He is being supported by virtually every Republican in town and has raised lots of money. Should be an interesting race.
You can help by forwarding this story to Catholic and Conservative media outlets. Thanks.
Oh well...a person can dream.;^)
She would be the candidate I would support. I so admired her record as a congresswoman. Too bad that she can't balance a checkbook, but then none of us are perfect. She might profit from getting some cosmetology tips from Janet Reno however.
While I can give McCormack credit for these, I wouldn't call him "moderate to conservative". Don't forget he was the major force in closing down the Berea gun show (which is going to re-open) so he is hardly pro-gun rights. In effect it was discrimination against legal businesses using a publically funded facility. Except for being pro-life and apparently pro voucher he is about as "moderate" as Dennis Kucinich, who is also pro-life.
He also solidly supports every one of the other seven points of the AFL-CIO socialist agenda, which includes items like the so called "living wage". He also supports banning Chief Wahoo.
There is no good choice for a conservative in this race.
I agree there are no good choices for conservatives in this race. Nevertheless, some choices are far worse than others. Jane Campbell, for instance, makes Hillary Clinton look mainstream. Mary Rose Oakar is a disaster.
The local GOP has wisely rallied behind McCormack because the alternatives are far worse.
Mary Rose Oakar ACU (American Conservative Union) ratings:
1992 - 4%
1991 - 0%
1990 - 4%
1989 - 0%
1988 - 8% (WOW)
1987 - 5%
1986 - 5%
1985 - 5%
1984 - 4%
Real impressive, all right. Perhaps the only Ohio congresscritter over that time with a worse record is Louis Stokes, who had 4% in 1990 and 0% in every other year.
She would run Cleveland on a mantra of going to Washington DC and feeding at the public trough there, and she is very good at that. She wants big socialist federal solutions to local problems at the expense of the rest of the USA. I don't want Ohio to have that reputation.
Fortunately I don't have the "privilege" of voting in this one!! Actually Tom Coyne might not have been the worse thing going either but he isn't running. McCormack got on my sh!t list big time for what he did to the Berea gun show. And apparently he hasn't quit sounding off about it either. Even though he is for vouchers the east side of Cleveland will vote for Pierce, because Tubbs Jones has told them to do so. They have been "trained" too well for 30+ years by one Louis Stokes.
If you get to vote in this one you have my deepest sympathies!!
And the news(?)papers refer to this as a "non-partisan" ballot!!
Democrat Mayor White in his early years as Mayor at least tried to privatize some city services. Then the socialist labor unions creamed him for it and despise him to this day. In fact the AFL-CIO is demanding that no privatization of any city services be allowed to get their endorsement in this election. All of Cleveland city council are democRATS too. Prognosis not good.
Let us not forget that her mom is Joan Brown Campbell, a true commie and Castro supporter.

I also think that Campbell, as well as Oaker and Pierce, is the reason so much Conservative money is flowing to McCormack.
Haven't forgotten at all. I have an article I clipped from the Plain Dealer dated Sunday Sept. 10, 2000 (Page 21-A) titled "2,000 pack Harlem church to give Castro a hero's welcome."
From the article:
"Guests included the Rev. Joan Brown Campbell, a former Clevelander and former head of the National Council of Churches, who campaigned vigorously for the repatriation of 6-year old Elian Gonzales to his father in Cuba, even bringing the boy's grandmothers to Washington"
Of course no mention of Jane Campbell at all or their relationship. Actually I thought Joan Brown was Jane's daughter.
