U.S. administration names conditions for Bush-Arafat meetingThe administration of U.S. President George W. Bush decided after deliberations at the White House on Friday that Bush will meet with Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat at a UN assembly meeting in New York at the end of September. Bush has not met with the Palestinian leader since winning the presidency, although the two have had several telephone conversations.During the White House deliberations, which focused on the Middle East, participants decided to set out several conditions that Arafat must meet before his meeting with Bush can take place. Arafat must first prove that he is taking steps to implement the cease-fire agreement brokered by CIA Director George Tenet, which states that the Palestinian leader must act against those responsible for committing terrorist attacks against Israel. Arafat must also end the incitement to violence. Further conditions set by the Bush administration include the demand that Arafat meet with Foreign Minister Shimon Peres in the coming weeks, and a renewal of security coordination meetings between Palestinian and Israeli delegations, which will be mediated by CIA representatives. The PLO representative in Washington, Hassan Abdel Rahman, confirmed Saturday that attempts are being made to organize a meeting between Bush and Arafat at the UN assembly. |
Bwaaaaaa. Looks like that meeting will never take place. How humiliating for Arafat.....while Sharon, Peres, all Israeli officials have an open door invite - and have met with Bush many times. LOL....
Powell is a wimp.;^)
