Senate leader hopes to kindle spirit of bipartisanship in D.C.
Looking to break down the walls of bipartisanship, Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., is trying to establish three new communication links to Senate and House Republicans.
Daschle said his concern about the economy, the desire to protect Social Security and fund America's priorities were catalysts when he proposed the historic joint Senate leadership meeting.

He won't make it through the first meeting without a harangue about Republicans and Social Security. Then he will mouth off to the press.
I wouldn't trust Daschle on anything. Always remember he was best boy to Senator George Mitchell, the most partisan, lying weasel ever to serve inthe Senate and who never kept his word to either Reagan or Bush the first.
When DemocRATS speak, they lie. When they are silent, they are stealing the American Dream.
Regards,
After the bilge Tiny Tom has spewed forth for months, such as when President Bush was leaving for Europe, why is now the time? President Bush has been reaching out since day 1.
Skepticism? Well of course there's skepticism, Dasshole. It might have something to do with your part in the Jeffords coup. And you wonder why republicans might be skeptical? What a maroon.
Gee, could he be in trouble with the surfs, I mean the constituents back home? The only reason I can see that Dasshole would want to do this is to appear to be less liberal than he actually is.
regards
It is the following;
The senate has rules that make it almost impossible to get anything done. This was established by our founders, who thought that government is best which governs least. So to insure both sides of the coin it established the house of representatives where a simple majority can rule with an iron fist.
They also established the Senate where a simple majority can't do much of anything. Since it takes both the house and the senate to pass a bill, the Senate really puts a crimp in getting anything passed.
In the senate a single senator can put a hold on almost anything. Under the rules it takes the yes votes of sixty senators to remove the hold. Thus any group of 41 senators out of 100 can stop anything. That was Trent Lotts problem and the cause of all the screaming about him. If he ever hoped to get a budget passed or anything else done, he had to reach out to Democrats. He had to have the votes of 5 or 6 democrats to do anything. When Republicans don't reach out they got blamed with shutting down the government. That saved Bill Clinton's second term for him.
So Lott started to try to work with the least onerous Democrats to try to get 60 votes for somethings he wanted to accomplish. It got him creamed in his own party. But what the media would have done to Lott for failing to try to work out agreements would have given control of the House to the Democrats and made Gore president in 2000.
Now Dachle is in a similar spot. The media will not make fun of DAschle as it did lot. But the Republicans can put him in a position of shutting down the government. It is Daschle who must get at least 11 Republicans to work with him. He will have to give in big time to get that done.
If would be a lot differnet if Daschle had 56 or 57 Democratic votes in the senate. But he has 50 and Jeffords. With 56 or 57 Democrats and 4 or 5 Rino's Daschle could actually take control. But he needs 11 and there are not eleven Rino's in the Senate. Daschle will have to kiss some Republican butt to get anything done at all.
One thing for certain. The Democrats understand the problem Dachle faces. They will not attack Daschle for doing what he has to do.
Knifing their leaders in the back is the conservatives favorite pastime. That is the big reason they have so few leaders.
