Ridiculed and denounced for supporting admitted child killer Andrea Yates, the pro-abortion pressure group National Organization for Women is spinning and backtracking as fast as it can.
At its annual convention this summer, NOW condemned Texas' treatment of the confessed drowner of her own five children - but did not criticize Yates herself - as "barbaric." On Aug. 23, Texas NOW leader Deborah Bell announced that her outfit, along with other left-wing groups, would raise money to defend Yates, the Washington Times reported today.
But unable to take the heat, NOW is distancing itself from that chapter. National president Kim Gandy wants everyone to know she isn't raising money for Yates. "The Houston chapter directed people to a fund set up by her lawyers," said the finger-pointing Gandy.
Gandy's statement came as 19 people rallied against NOW's Washington headquarters Thursday, the Times reported.
"I don't think we should make excuses for murder," said Bishop Imagene Stewart, who represented African American Women's Clergy Association at the demonstration. "If we let her get away with this, other women who are mad at their husbands will do it too, and just plead insanity."
Marie Jose-Ragab, chairman of the dissident Dulles chapter of NOW, said that the national group's decision to back Yates was not playing well with NOW's constituency.
"It was a political decision to jump on it as soon as the Yates case came up," she said.

The truth seems so refreshing when it comes from unexpected sources.

The truth seems so refreshing when it comes from unexpected sources. Not entirely unexpected. Dulles was the one chapter of NOW that came out against Bill Clinton and for Juanita Broaddrick. That's why the article refers to them as "dissident".

I thought that this chapter might be the same one who supported Juanita...although I am not a feminist by today's definition (as in pro-abortion above all else) I did not find it bizarre that some women would come out and offer support for Andrea Yates...while I find what she did horrific I find myself less angry with her and absolutely furious with the non-psychotic adults around her beginning with hubby Rusty...the list of anti-psychotic medication that she was prescribed over the years is astounding...when she nosedived (attempted suicide, for example) after the birth of her 4th child I think that her family should have intervened and attempted to alleviate the stress of her daily existence...instead they hoped it would all right itself out...her husband in particular showed an incredible lack of intelligence and caring by impregnating her with child number 5 and then leaving her home alone for at least 5 days a week to cope with a situation when she was obviously unable to cope...I don't think that she should get the death penalty for doing this act despite its brutality...she was on record as being mentally ill...her defense is not a last minute effort to avoid responsibility for her behavior...I don't understand why people on this forum hate her so much...her husband and the other sane members of the family who abandoned her to her fate over the years are far more culpable of criminal child neglect in this situation IMHO...her mental illness was real.

Morning, kattracks....my guess is that LATER couldn't raise enough money to support Yates so they decided to spin it into "backpeddaling" away from her....

This is annoying. I want them out there shrilly and loudly defending Andrea Yates and screaming about how she is not a bad person, just misunderstood. And how all women are subject to postpartum depression and that it is a legitimate defense against murder charges. I want them screaming this loud and long in everybodies faces!!
