Animal Rights Activists Suggest 'Eat the Whales'
Last Updated: September 07, 2001 07:39 AM ET
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Reuters) - An animal rights group that got in hot water for planning ads that appeared to defend shark attacks has launched a new campaign that suggests people should eat whales.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) unveiled a billboard in downtown Vancouver this week that pictures a cartoon chicken and cow painting the sign with the message; "Eat the Whales."
The group said it opposes whale hunting but wanted to draw attention to the fact that many people get upset at the idea of killing whales but do not object to eating meat from chickens, cows and other land animals.
"Some people who blubber about harpooning whales don't hesitate to snag buckets of chicken wings," PETA's vegan campaign coordinator Andrew Butler said in a press release, which suggests whales are a more efficient food source.
A planned advertising campaign in the United States that would have urged sympathy for sharks was canceled by PETA this week following two fatal shark attacks along the Atlantic coast.
The whale billboard is located only a short distance from several sushi restaurants and shares space with signs promoting beer and luxury cars.
Yours in Truth,
Is this for real?
You watch, the liberal press (Free Republic notwithstanding) will highlight this as a "controversy" and essentially give PETA free airtime. Just ignore it.
Wasn't their last outrage about the "Got Milk?" campaign? Something about Rudolf Guiliani and a "Got Cancer?" billboard?
Man should be a part of ecology, not an abberation to be pushed down the food chain. Cows and chickens thrive because they are such useful creatures. One can bet that if sharks were in charge, they wouldn't be passing laws to ban feeding on humans.
"Some people who blubber about harpooning whales don't hesitate to snag buckets of chicken wings,"
What do you think the chances are that this twit meant to use the word 'blubber' in a clever manner?
I hope Chick-fil-a sues their skinny little vegan emaciated asses off.
And we call these people...liberals!
4 (16 ounce) whale fillets
2 tablespoons olive oil
Salt and freshly ground pepper
Roasted Yellow Pepper Grits
Roasted Poblano Sauce
Brush whale with olive oil on both sides and season with
salt and pepper. Heat saute pan or grill pan over
high heat until smoking. Grill, blubber side down, for 3
to 4 minutes or until golden brown. Turn over and
continue cooking for 2 to 3 minutes for medium-
well doneness.
Place a heaping mound of Yellow Pepper Grits
onto 4 dinner plates. Place a fillet on
top of each and drizzle with the Poblano Sauce.
