Clerk Killed After Giving Robber Cash
Salt Lake Tribune ^ | September 7, 2001 | Jacob Santini

Posted on 09/07/2001 6:34:40 PM PDT by Mulder

A convenience store clerk was shot and killed Thursday night after he complied with a robber's demands, police said.

At about 7:20 p.m., a man entered the Sunshine Food Mart, at 1845 S. 700 East, Salt Lake City, brandished a handgun and demanded money.

The clerk, identified only as a male, opened the register and gave the robber an undisclosed amount of money, said Salt Lake police Sgt. Fred Louis. The robber then shot the clerk.

"It's a brutal crime," Louis said. "The clerk complied. He didn't show any resistance."

It appeared as though the clerk suffered a single gunshot wound to the upper torso, Louis said.

The victim was found about 15 minutes later by a customer at the store.

Police reported a surveillance tape recorded the entire incident.

The business is family owned, but Louis was unsure if the clerk were a member of the family.

Police described the gunman as a male, about 5-feet 7-inches tall. He fled the scene of foot.

Pointing a gun at a clerk and making threats and demands is not "brandishing a handgun."

Instead of putting up signs in stores and fast food joints, management should display sharpshooter trophies earned by their employees at the range sponsored by consciencious employers who stand up for the rights of their workers to protect themselves, rather then the "rights" of armed robbers to steal from them.

He probably had a SIG SAUER in a concealment holster and didn't trust it to function when "crunch time" came. Just kidding, Mulder. This is a sad story and a lesson should be learned by all. Protect yourselves out there, it is a brutal world. Prayers for the family.

Hope you are well.

If the clerk was packing a Sig (or a Glock, Beretta, Kimber, or any quality gun) with quality factory SD ammo, then the outcome would have been much different.

Of course, packing is just half the story. Practicing your draw and aim is the other half.

BTW, Inspector: I just picked up my new two-tone Sig 245 last week. I can't wait to break her in at the range!

Police were looking Friday for a black male, approximately 5-foot-7 with a medium build, Louis said. He was last seen wearing a light-colored athletic shirt, dark pants, a baseball cap and a bandana covering his face.

no word on the clerk, age or identity. usually they are adults
when working at night, as minors aren’t permitted to sell beer.
most convenience stores don’t allow clerks to carry. sad.

if i go into a 7-11 or whatever, i carry.
it can (obviously) happen anywhere. prayers for the family.

When I was working my way through college, I had a job at a service station, and when I pulled night shift, some of the wierdest, meanest looking folks would stop in for their $5 worth of gas. I started keeping my Colt .45 ACP stuck in my belt under my jacket, and I didn't go to extreme lengths to keep it concealed. Never had a problem.

The convenience store right across the street was held up twice, and both clerks were shot and killed. I wasn't on duty when those robberies happened. But after these incidents, the clerks started packing iron on their hips, and there was no more trouble.

That used to work years ago, but with todays criminals, no way.

I'm an LEO, and I won't go anywere without my weapon, and niether does my wife.

We need to get out there and support the NRA and save the 2nd Amendment.

If I go down, it will be on my terms and you better be faster than me.

You're a lucky guy. Please flag me to any kind of range report you may post concerning this new weapon, whether on FR or off. You're correct, the clerk should have been armed and very PRACTICED with his sidearm. I've promised myself that I ain't gonna go out like that.

I'm currently fighting tooth-and-nail to get a Wilson Combat .45. I'll keep you abreast of any range reports when this happens.

Be safe, be armed.

Very good advice.

Too many people get into the mindset of "I probably won't need it, so I'll just leave it at home". Of course, it's impossible to predict where and when you'll need it, so it's best to carry all the time.

???????

bran·dish [brándish ] (past bran·dished, past participle bran·dished, present participle bran·dish·ing, 3rd person present singular bran·dish·es) transitive verb wave something about: to wave something about, especially a weapon, in a menacing, theatrical, or triumphant way

I know some LEO's that think like that. Bad attitude. I would rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

There are many safety steps store owners can take. I would start with installing buzzer doors in these shops. To get in at night, you have to ring the bell to get the clerk to let you in. Obviously, if you have a bandana on your face, he won't let you in. If you don't have the bandana, you will be captured on camera before entering. Suspicious looking characters can still get in, but they will never catch the clerk off guard. If the clerk is packing heat, he can be ready.

I think that "armed robbery" and "murder" are more appropriate terms for this crime than "brandishing." If the clerk had brandished a gun when he was threatened, it wouldn't have been a crime. The robber/murderer was committing a horrible crime.

I'll do that it. It looks like it will be next weekend though since my ammo hasn't arrived yet.
