It's a Man's Man's Man's World: Russell Crowe in Master and Commander

Fans of Peter Weir's 2003 adventure movie Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World are often heard to ask, "Why didn't they make a sequel?" as a halfway stop to the question "Why don't they make more films like this?" The answer to the first question, like any Hollywood mystery, has to do with money and studio expectations.

The answer to the second requires you to think about men, what they like, what they want, and if any of those things have been a priority at any movie studio in the near quarter century since Master and Commander came out.

Because the audience that's grown up around the film is palpably male, which GQ magazine thought worth exploring, in a 2023 story written by senior editor Gabriella Paiella that stated plainly: "If you kidnapped a hundred of Hollywood's top minds and forced them to work around the clock, they could not engineer a more exquisite Dad Movie."

It's worth mentioning that the GQ story came out at the same time social media was briefly aflame with women asking men in their lives how often they thought about Rome. So it was time once again to hire a woman to wonder aloud just what was up with men, after all – in no less than GQ magazine. (Men's magazines have, for years, hosted regular variations of this exercise – a regular, occasionally hostile and more than faintly condescending interrogation of its readership, their tastes and motivations that's rarely echoed by women's magazines.)

Great books. I have the whole series and one of these days I’ll binge-read them all (again).

I’ve never seen the movie, and won’t. If I enjoy books, I very seldom like the filmed versions of them. To me, Russell Crowe simply is not Jack Aubrey as I pictured him while reading the books.

Actually that movie is the best representation of life on a naval vessel of that period. I didn’t start reading the books until after I saw the movie. I had no preconceived notions on Jack Aubrey.

I had the same problem transitioning to TV from radio in the early ‘50’s. The television versions of the characters I had listened to on radio didn’t look anything like I had “pictured” them. The only exception was Sergeant Preston of the Yukon (and his wonder dog Yukon King).

It was an incredible, beast of a movie! I could follow everything having read all the O’Brien “Aubrey/Maturin” novels as well as all of C.S. Forrester’s “Hornblower” novels. (I tried reading some Alexander Kent’s “Bolitho” novels and they never quite took with me.)

A ton of work went into that movie and it was hoped to be the start of a franchise, but it didn’t do well enough commercially or critically. It was under appreciated for a long time.

Maturin’s character wasn’t as I imagined him. Aubrey was everything I ever imagined that character to be. Still a tremendous, cracking good movie!

I too was disappointed there weren’t more. I read somewhere and I have no idea if its true the reason was because Russell Crowe was a problem.

I remember seeing the Humphrey Bogart movie, “The African Queen”. Then, some years later I read the book by C. S. Forester. The ending was shockingly different from the movie.

My favorite Maturin “naval parlance mangling” came when he conflated the terms “full and by” and “sailing large” to create “by and large.”

went on the boat where it is moored in San Diego. Little bit smaller I think than the uss constitution in boston harbor. But it does have a roomy aft deck.
