Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) called out Republicans who push crony capitalist policies, explaining that it is part of the reason young people see socialism favorably.
During an interview on the Sage Steele Show with host Sage Steele, DeSantis explained that one reason “screaming socialism” didn’t work in the midterm elections was because “young people have a very positive view of socialism compared to capitalism.” DeSantis noted that while part of the reason is “the education in our universities,” the other part is that young people are comparing socialism to “how government gets involved in business and you have crony capitalism.”
DeSantis described the “corporatist Republicans who propagate” crony capitalism as being “the best kind of indirect supporters of socialism.”
“So, here’s the issue. I think — obviously like a guy like me, if I see a socialist candidate, it’s an easy thing for me to vote no,” DeSantis explained. “I mean, like, it’s not even a question. But the question is, for kind of the broader electorate who aren’t as partisan, is just screaming socialism going to work? Obviously, it didn’t work in this election, and why? I think the reason is, young people have a very positive view of socialism compared to capitalism.”
DeSantis continued: “The question is, why is that? Some of it is the education in our universities or whatever. But I think a big part of that is, what they’re comparing is not free enterprise to socialism. What they’re comparing is how government gets involved in business and you have crony capitalism. So, the best kind of indirect supporters of socialism are some of these corporatist Republicans who propagate these crony policies.”

You can't avoid favoring industries entirely. Sometimes it's a necessity, but I suspect the need is more rare than it's made out to be.
Under Trump, the federal government has acquired ownership in more than 40 companies, usually after putting pressure on them. Hard to scare people about socialism when you are practicing it.
He’s getting an early start with the mud slinging at the wrong party. This will not endear him to the republican base, true or not.
I have two feet.
Hispanics can put in a slab foundation in about six man days.
Hispanics can put concrete block walls for a house in about six man days.
Prohibiting congress from insider trading would go a long way towards reducing crony capitalism.
His timing is right on wouldn’t you say? So is his criticism of Vivek, a wannabe schlick meister now exposed. So he names names. Sticking it to the losers proves his point. He may not be brown enough but we gotta get our point across and the current leadership ain’t leading. Start with Thune and Murkowski.
H-1B started 35 years ago. Time to kill it.
H-1B started 35 years ago. Time to kill it.
You’re full of it.
Unfortunately, that's what our stupid primary system moments. Remember all the nasty things Trump said about Rubio and Cruz and Huckabee Haley and vice versa. And then they all ended up in his administration.
This is why the Republican Party is known as The Stupid Party. Trump was able to overcome the nastiness directed at him by his primary opponents by actually promoting ideas that resonated with Republican voters.
What are DeSantis's ideas? Slinging mud is part of this insanity but let's hear some actual ideas and policies. That goes for all the candidates who will eventually join the fray. If fray us even a word.
“Trump’s conduct has been quite corrupt in his second term: the meme coins, the pay-to-play access... Why does he think he can get away with it?”
He wants to end the H-1B visa. He could win on that alone.
I guess you weren't paying attention when DeSantis's been both badmouthing and actually fighting against H-1B and other abusive immigration programs for at least the past two years. And he's shown to shrink the size of the Florida government.
DeSantis's actions speak VERY loudly.
He’s not wrong. This isn’t the 2024 DeSantis. He has learned his lessons.
I’m not much of a Ron fan but it was a great interview.
“H1B”
Great issue—he needs to develop strong talking points on it.
My concern with DeSantis has been the charisma factor.
He has got to hone his message, stay focused and get outstanding at presenting it.
Vague statements like “crony capitalism” do not help. It is unclear exactly what he is trying to say—and exactly what he wants to do.
Trump has been touugh on h1bs, but people like Vivek and back stabbers like Tom Tillis, are zombie like GOP defenders of it. And plenty of democraps are all in on h1bs too, since they could care less about the american worker.
Oh. Poor Ron De
His timing is so bad he’s making Ted Cruz’ Bahamas flight during this ice storm look like well-advised
Well, right now it’s just Monday morning quarterbacking.
