Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Sunday he had a constructive conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump about a potential trade deal and that negotiators would work in the coming weeks toward an agreement, signaling fresh momentum in a bitter trade dispute just days before the U.S. midterm elections.
Carney said the conversation built on recent discussions about the outlines of a deal that would create jobs, lower costs for families and protect Canada's languages, culture and sovereignty.
"Our teams will now be working in the coming weeks to deliver that outcome," Carney wrote on social media.
The upbeat assessment marks a shift from August, when Canada walked away from negotiations after rejecting U.S. demands that Carney said threatened Canadian sovereignty, French-language protections and the auto industry. Trump responded with 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion in Canadian goods, prompting Canadian retaliation.
Talks have since resumed, but progress has been uneven. Last week, Carney said negotiations had intensified slightly and insisted that any movement toward a deal was because Washington was coming closer to Canada's position.
As recently as Wednesday, Carney said the countries were not yet in a position to reach an agreement before Tuesday's midterm elections.
The two sides have been discussing possible relief from U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and automobiles, although no details of a potential agreement have been announced.
Trump's trade war with Canada has become an issue in the Nov. 3 midterm elections, particularly in Michigan and Maine, where Republican candidates have faced pressure over tariffs hurting local businesses. Michigan Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers has called for an end to the tariff war.

Canada itself is not doing very well economically plus worse inflation than the US.
Carney’s plan is to make a deal then say he’s better than Trump . Carney is worst than the worst democrat and can’t be trusted
Where do you get that conclusion from? Canadas inflation was quite a bit lower in September at 3.1% and holding steady vs 3.7% for the U.S. and is forecast to have the second best economy in the G7 for 2027.
It’s fair to say there are economic challenges brought about by the trade war currently going on but it isn’t “not doing well”.
‘Carney said the conversation built on recent discussions about the outlines of a deal that would create jobs, lower costs for families and protect Canada’s languages, culture and sovereignty.’
This is why Canada walked away. Original deal had US/Canada alignment on immigration, trade, terrorism and energy policy. Canadian cultural leaders had changed attitude so much it would force them to abandon their ‘values’ to enter the agreement. It is not about common sense or good policy- it is still socialist policies that eclipse the current fight regarding DSA here. I feel Canada is lost if they can’t ‘come off their high horse’ and cooperate

The only thing Carney is doing is making himself and companies he’s connected to very rich . He has another Carbon Credit Scam bigger than Algore’s going and he wants democrats to win so they’ll buy into his scam as well
America was quite clear that it didnt care about the language issue. What had been hinted at is that Canada was willing to ve a conduit for hiding country of origin of manufacturing for Chyna.
America needs a Monroe Doctrine, with or without Canada’s help.
Canada needs it too - whether they know it, or not.
Wonder what they got for leaving...
The AP hates Trump so it’s odd they would cover this story before midterms...
“Canadian” steel, from China.
