Brazil called in Argentina's highest diplomat in Brasilia to explain the Argentine government's role in the departure of Senator Flavio Bolsonaro to the US after losing the presidential election, two sources in the Brazilian government said on Friday, as Argentina denied the summoning.
Brazil's foreign ministry summoned the charge d'affaires at Argentina's embassy, Maria Emilia Cortes, on Thursday, the sources said. Cortes was received by the ministry's South America Department director, Joao Marcelo de Queiroz, one of the sources added.
It marks the latest diplomatic tension between the neighboring countries after Brazil downgraded ties with Argentina in August following insults from President Javier Milei towards his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Argentina's Foreign Affairs Minister Pablo Quirno, commenting on a media report about Brazil's move, wrote on X that "there was no request for explanation." The Brazilian foreign ministry declined to comment.
Senator Bolsonaro, son of imprisoned former President Jair Bolsonaro, arrived in the US on Wednesday morning after leaving Brazil.

It’s called being pro-active. Think of how much trouble would have been avoided if Jimmy Carter had closed down the US embassy in Tehran before the Shah was brought into the US for treatment. What if Trump were president while Russia was preparing to invade the Ukraine? What if April Glasbie didn’t give Saddam the go ahead to invade Kuwait?
So many what-ifs out there. Gotta stay one step ahead of them.
While I am certainly not in his shoes, nor does anyone fully understand the behind-the-scenes politics - I am very disappointed Bolsonaro fled Brazil
Yes, he probably would have been arrested and put through judicial hell by the evil Alexandre de Moraes and Brazil’s marxists. Maybe they would have even killed him.
But the more unjust persecution he received, the more authority and future power Bolsonaro (and his movement) would have.
Look at what true leaders like Walesa or Havel achieved against Soviet marxism. Their names will live in history for centuries.
If you want to lead a nation of 215 million people one has to have moral courage
No different from when Canadians diplomats hid Americans when radical Iranians overran the embassy.
Because the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
