Germany and France offer to build submarines for Argentina as threat to the Falkland Islands rises

German and French manufacturers have made offers to build three submarines for Argentina and revamp its drab naval fleet as the country seeks to advance its claim to the Falkland Islands.

President Javier Milei previously warned his country would 'recover' the Falklands and told the UN General Assembly in New York that Argentina could be forced to 'take matters into our own hands'.

Earlier this month Argentina's military chief said his government wanted three new hunter-killer submarines.

And Admiral Marcelo Dalle Nogare, chief of the joint staff of Argentina's armed forces, said Germany and France had both offered to manufacture them.

He said: 'Whichever of the two options we choose, they are among the best submarines in the world today.'

French company Naval Group offered its Scorpene submarines while Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) proposed its Type 209NG models.

Both governments have offered to finance the submarine deal in full before Argentina repays in instalments, Mr Dalle Nogare said.

TKMS had reportedly submitted a formal bid to Buenos Aires and said a decision in principle on the deal was expected this year.

Argentina bought German-manufactured Type 209s in the 1970s.

These included the ARA San Luis, which patrolled and unleashed torpedo attacks against British forces during the Falklands war in 1982.

Though it landed no hits it evaded British anti-submarine forces and remained in service until 1997.

Both firms in the Argentine submarine race are major actors in the defence industry, with TKMS's British arm, Atlas UK, providing submersible countermeasures to the Royal Navy.

Any deal to supply Buenos Aires with submarines would need permission from the relevant government before export.

Mr Dalle Nogare said the 'final decision will ultimately be a geopolitical one, based on interests and, above all, financing'.

In other news, Macron has asked Burnham for pounds for Ukraine.

What’s French for pound dirt?

By the time England gets around to joining the EU, two things will happen.

1. England will collapse.

2. The EU will collapse.

The map of Europe (especially the western part) will look very different in 2050.

Does Argentina still have the U-boat Hitler used to escape Germany?

The way things are going in the UK, Argentina might be better off saving their money and working out a deal when the time comes.

Or just write a check for 3,662 to hold a referendum so they'll announce independence from the UK and join Argentina as a province.

The UK couldn’t stop Argentina from taking the islands at this point.

Shouldn’t France and Germany be more concerned about their own countries ... as in Open Borders ... right now?

Why are the ships always sinking and blinking at sea?
What makes the British start thinking of their cup of tea?
It’s now the season, the reason, it’s plain what it means
German submarines!

Come on. The limeys could have attacked the mainland in ‘82 to show the generals they meant business but the US wouldn’t allow them outside of an attack on an airfield. As of now a British stealth submarine could launch missiles on Buenos Aires from a distance with a promise to come back for more. What will the Argentines do? Threaten the islanders? Britain could then threaten them in the biggest way. Do you think at that point they’ll be listening to Trump?

All they need to do is announce that the capitol city will be evacuated in 48 hours-or else.

The French-they sold Iraq the missiles that hit the USS Stark. Killed 37 of our sailors. The krauts and the limeys are no different. Hard to believe free capitalist nations would work against each other. The Stark attack happened under Reagan.

There is no way Hitler escaped to in a U Boat. Only 4 U Boats actually survived the war. It was a one way mission.

I actually met a guy who was on one of them that made it back. He told the story of a guy who stole a pack of cigarettes. The captain lined the crew up on the deck and browbeat them until the thief confessed. The captain then pulled out his Luger and shot the guy in the head so that he fell overboard. They left him there.

Yes, they could. Easily. The Falklands are much better defended than in 1982. Argentina has zero chance of taking the Falklands by force without significant investment in their military for a decade or so.

“ The Falklands are much better defended than in 1982. Argentina has zero chance of taking the Falklands by force without significant investment in their military for a decade or so.”

Nonsense.

Argentina has zero chance of it lasting more than a week for them to take the Falklands if they chose to do so.

If a war starts, the UK will go in only with what they have there and that is not enough.

Look at the facts:

The straight-line distance from the United Kingdom to the Falkland Islands is approximately 8,050 miles.

The straight-line distance from Argentina to the Falkland Islands is approximately 240 miles.

There are around 1,500 UK military personnel stationed on the Falkland Islands at any one time.

The Royal Air Force maintains the most significant contingent of personnel at the Falkland Islands, with RAF Mount Pleasant is main operating base.

A single flight of four Tranche 1 Typhoon fighters is based at RAF Mount Pleasant, tasked with air combat patrol of the islands and the surrounding areas.

The Tranche 1 fighters are the oldest versions of the Typhoon and has no ground attack capability, and limited sensors.

The lightly-armed Royal Navy Offshore Patrol Vessel, HMS Medway, is the only UK ship stationed in Falklands.

Argentina fields 72,000–108,000 active troops, 241–251 aircraft, 231–362 tanks, and 23–42 naval vessels.

If it starts, the war will not last a week.
