A former Mexican state attorney general could face trial for treason over accusations that he illegally launched a joint operation with the CIA without telling the federal government.
The operation to dismantle a drug lab in the state of Chihuahua in northern Mexico in April drew attention after two CIA agents and two state officials died in a car accident on their way back.
That raised questions about the Trump administration's actions on Mexican soil, and outraged President Claudia Sheinbaum, who has made a strong defense of national sovereignty a centerpiece of her administration. The state district attorney, César Jáuregui, resigned, saying he wanted to clear the way for an inquiry into the operation.
He was arrested Oct. 17 on state charges of illegal exercise of public office, which a judge ruled Thursday can go to trial. Federal officials later added the treason charge, and a federal judge will decide Saturday whether to allow the indictment.
Earlier this year, a statement from Mexico's Ministry of Security said one U.S. agent entered Mexico as a visitor while the other entered with a diplomatic passport.
"None had formal accreditation to participate in operational activities in national territory," the security ministry said.

“who has made a strong defense of national sovereignty a centerpiece of her administration.”
Her national sovereignty, definitely not our’s. The irony meter is pegged.
I don’t think Sheinbaum really cares about the CIA in Mexico.
She just doesn’t want to die by drug cartel operatives.
Annex all northern states of Mexico to US. Call it Trumpland.
What’s happened is the gangs are so strong that the government has reached an “accommodation” not to fight them. They were fighting them and it was a never-ending insurgency type war they decided they couldn’t win. As long as the Mexican government is what it is, there is no path for the ordinary citizen to prosper other than go be in the drug trade. And that drug trade exists because the by comparison supercharged American economy just over the border pays outrageous money for powder that costs, in Mexico, nothing. So, this isn’t going to stop or improve...ever. To do so Mexico would need to seriously change, or the US appetite for drugs would need to go away. Don’t see either happening.
If we can have a state called New Mexico, they can have a state called New America.
Did they die in a car accident or car “accident”.
Drug cartels are enemies of these United States. Buying cartel produced or transported drugs gives "aid and comfort" to the drug cartels. Likewise transporting and selling cartel drugs gives "aid and comfort" to the drug cartels.
US Constitution, Article III, Section 3:
“Treason against the United States shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court.”
Does the use, sale, or transportation of cartel drugs constitute Treason against the United States?
LOL.
She does not care about USA sovereignty at all.
Possibly 2 million illegals walked or hitch hiked to the Mexico-USA border, then crossed illegally into the USA.
Sheinbaum never said word!
There is no real pressure to stop people from using drugs. It’s not “legal” but how many times have you heard about or witnessed cops instructing people to throw away the drugs and then not arresting them? I heard those conversations frequently while in school. So why is that? Essentially prosecuting drug use is not profitable and putting more people in prison is prohibitively expensive. Penalties such as huge fines, whipping or taking away someone’s car just won’t fly politically. Would they work? We don’t know. Obviously not for addicts but it sure might stop stockbrokers from trying the stuff. And that’s another issue. I think the number of hugely important and wealthy people using imported drugs prevents any real demand side policy from working.
We already know that lopping off the big cartels creates an ideal small and efficient market that will greatly exceed the quantities that a few tightly controlled cartels would allow. Big business monopolizes and literally kills the small business. But once they’re gone there’s nothing but lots and lots of small businesses. The lesson is you could, theoretically kill the big rats and eliminate them, but what replaces them is an infinite number or cockroaches. Good luck with infinite number of smaller targets.
“… and outraged President Claudia Sheinbaum…”
Because her cut from the cartels was reduced by the closure of the drug lab?
I think the number of hugely important and wealthy people using imported drugs prevents any real demand side policy from working.
The drug industry has two components. One the drug dealers who make tons of money from what I gather selling the stuff and killing people.
The second part is the investigative/court industry that pays huge amounts of money and keeps many individuals involved in maintaining the problem at a somewhat even level.
In my opinion, upping the penalties to death or banishment to some barren island would work to stop the first part but the second part would be unhappy being reduced employed.
Mexico — where destroying drug labs is treason.
