Ukraine's Zelensky defies Trump with Russian refinery strikes (today 10/15)

Kyiv (Ukraine) (AFP) – Ukraine will no longer abide by US President Donald Trump's demands not to strike Russian oil refineries, President Volodymyr Zelensky said in remarks published Thursday, amid deepening tensions between the two leaders over a US-Russia diesel agreement.

Relations between Kyiv and Washington have soured since last week, when Trump eased sanctions on Russia in exchange for Moscow releasing large amounts of diesel onto global markets.

Zelensky described the deal as a "weak decision", saying it would encourage Russia to prolong its four-and-a-half-year war with Ukraine, while several of Ukraine's European allies criticised the agreement.

Addressing the criticism on Saturday, Trump claimed Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries were to blame for rising diesel prices and said it was "time for Ukraine to get a new president".

"The block (on attacking refineries) is out," Zelensky told the Financial Times in an interview published on Thursday. "We're done."

Russia on Thursday reported that an oil refinery in Ryazan, south of the capital, Moscow, had been hit in a "large-scale attack".

Sure, because Putin, who never agreed to a pause on energy strikes, has been hitting Ukraine's energy grid repeatedly. Ukraine paused its attacks on refineries while Russia keeps hitting Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

At least 600,000 people were without power early Wednesday in Ukraine, after Russia launched an aerial attack that struck energy infrastructure - October 14, 2026

https://abcnews.com/International/600000-power-ukraine-russia-launches-missile-drone-attack/story?id=137248732

On Sunday morning, Trump again turned to his social media platform to announce, "Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed."

Both parties had not agreed, and Russian strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure continued.

On Monday afternoon, during a brief Q&A, a reporter asked Trump an important and rather obvious question: Why did he say that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an energy ceasefire when that did not actually happen?

"Well, they agreed, you know why?" Trump replied. "Because I said, 'You agree.' That's why. They agreed because I said they agreed."

That’s $200 billion US tax dollars we wasted.

They were one of the most corrupt nations in the world even before we were dumping cash on them. That’s not a good place to invest our money.

No Z is fighting a war of survival and even if Russia delivers the 300,000 tons of diesel before Nov 3, its going to be too little, too late with estimates showing that it changes the diesel price by just pennies.

"If we get diesel from Russia, basically it means that their existing customers are not going to get it and they'll have to go somewhere else, and that will keep the price basically where it is now," Michael Lynch, distinguished fellow at Energy Policy Research Foundation

This is all a ploy to help Democrats win in the midterms. The statement about not stopping the air strikes because it might delay the end of the war is absurd. There is no end of the war in sight. The midterm elections which are important to Trump are in less than a month. Therefore Ukraine could easily stop those strikes to assist the price of gasoline if possible and resume the strikes after the elections.

And obviously losing the United States as an ally and losing United States military and intelligence support is a huge blow to the Ukraine war effort. So I call total BS on this and it is being done to create a problem for Trump going into the midterms. This is straight out election interference by Ukraine and by its European allies.

Yep, wasn't it 'cute' when we stood for something?

“History teaches that wars begin when governments believe the price of aggression is cheap,” Reagan warned in 1984. “To keep the peace, we and our allies must . . . convince any potential aggressor that war could bring no benefit, only disaster.”

I don’t want Russia to win in Ukraine but you are 100% correct that this is election interference. Obviously Ukraine could withhold strikes on oil facilities for the next 3 weeks going into the elections. Instead, they are publicizing a public Feud with Trump to make it look like he is siding with Russia to play into the Russia hoax theme of the democratic party.

Rather than be nervous about this Trump should very publicly explain to the American people that this is an effort to interfere in our elections and that he is putting America first before Ukraine Russia or any other country.

Sadly I have to agree that in the face of an oil price crisis affecting the elections in the United states, even the overall Ukrainian strategy of attacking Russian oil facilities was obviously instituted to drive up the price of oil and to hurt Trump during the midterm elections.

A very dangerous game because if I was Trump I would take this out of their hides following the election.
