'Zero tolerance' for violating new directive, university president says
Cornell University has suspended all frat parties and events for the rest of the 2026-27 academic year, president Michael Kotlikoff announced Tuesday, as an alleged gang rape at one of the school's fraternities continues to fuel calls for action and accountability.
Kotlikoff, who has faced pressure to resign over the case, said there would be "zero tolerance" for any violations of the new directive.
"Any fraternity holding an in-house party or social event will receive an immediate emergency suspension," he said in a written statement posted on Cornell's website.
It's among a series of measures Kotlikoff said the university is taking "to strengthen campus safety, better support survivors, and begin addressing the social context of sexual violence at Cornell."
The case has drawn international media attention after a woman filed a lawsuit last month against the university and her alleged assailants.
The woman, referred to as Jane Doe in court documents, has accused seven members of Cornell's Chi Phi fraternity of raping her at the frat house in October 2024, while she was incapacitated.
The case set off a wave of protests, including on the university campus in Ithaca, N.Y., and calls for justice and, more broadly, an end to sexual violence...

Just one question: Is that worse than

?
Regards,
I never quite understood fraternities. During my stay in college 2 frats were suspended temporarily and one was permanently banned. And this was 40 years ago, so this issue is nothing new.
CC
How about instead allowing social events - but having Sister Killjoy walk around the party room with a wooden ruler, checking to ensure that all dancers are at least six inches apart, and rapping them on the knuckles when they misbehave?

Regards,
Fraternities go back to before colleges were coed. So do sororities. Do they really need to exist? When I was a freshman in college, DKE ( Brett Kavanaugh’s jock frat) got in trouble for stoning gays walking down past their frat house on a gay pride parade. Zeta psi got in trouble for hiring prostitutes to do live sex shows during rush week parties. Fraternities would use lecture halls on weekends to show porno movies for charity, then feminist groups would call in bomb scares to prevent the frat boys from showing the porno movies, which often were quite crowded with males, females and couples, I was told.
On the other hand, I know frat members who still remain tight with guys they went to college with in 1978, when hazing was extreme. …& when some girls consented to have sex with the brotherhood, & when some girls did get raped by fraternities. I think the Cornell guys are innocent, but it’s an Ivy League school. Take your swingers parties off campus. Why do Ivy League schools still have sororities and fraternities? Seems kind of tribal. Did you ever see black fraternities that use cattle branding for initiation & do those martial step shows? Lots of Farrahkan stuff.
Are you a male? With normal male urges? Then you should have understood!
However, in my fraternity, we focussed on fencing (studentisches Fechten), punting on the river, horseback riding, and ceremonial drinking rituals to which females had absolutely no access.
But we would also occasionally host in-house parties to which nubile young ladies were invited and at which alcohol was served, so there was that, too.
It was fun! What's to "not get?!"
Regards,
Notre Dame does not allow frats.
Collective guilt. Imagine if this policy was implemented against the group that commits a disproportionate amount of violent crime In this country.
And what about suspending sorority parties. If its for protection after all...
What kind of argument is "Do they really need to exist?!"
With that logic, you could argue for the banning of almost any innocent or borderline-not-so-innocent behavior!
"Do we really need to have sock-hops and box lunch socials? After all: Someone's fee-eelings might get hurt! Remember the time at that one party when Jennie Applebee ate too much onion dip and drank too much Kool-Aid and then had to throw up all over the geraniums? Or when Steve Bollander was caught peeing in the cloak room? This madness cannot be sanctioned!!!"Regards,
So what? I mean, really: What does that prove?
At my university, there was one Catholic fraternity, the Akademische Verbindung Guestfalia. We used to conduct joint horseback riding lessons with them (for the younger pledges). Nice guys - but their Komment (code) didn't allow duelling, which I felt kind of sucked.
What's your point? My joke about "Sister KillJoy" policing frat parties was not intended to seriously imply any logical connection between Catholicism and fraternities.
Regards,
Joining a fraternity is a normal male urge? I never got frats, either, but I made friends and still have them. I had a girlfriend, too. & a car. A bunch of guys I played tackle football with every Sunday on the college lawn, sun, rain, or snow…..played basketball games in college gym, and had some girls we hung out with too, as friends—- & my girlfriend would come out with us, too.- a big group going out to dinner or lunch together. My biological brother and my roommate’s biological brother went to the same college and we had dinner in our apartment for the real brothers once a week. Not everybody joins a frat or wants, or needs one. I guess we don’t get each other.
I remember such goings ons.. and the participants from the nearby school of pharmacy were always interesting...
ah to be young and foolish in the 70’s again...
It’s beyond understanding why frats and soces even exist in 2026.
I never asserted that!
Rather: Joining a fraternity can be a practical means of channeling some male urges. It can open up opportunities to more easily satisfying those urges.
Not everybody joins a frat or wants, or needs one.
I agree completely! In fact, when I was in charge of recruitment and the "care and feeding" of new pledges, I rejected quite a number of candidates as "unsuitable." I also voted to expel some new pledges who later failed to "make the mark."
I simply reject your dismissive argument of "why do they even need to exist?" That's a subtle or not-so-subtle call for banning things merely because you don't "understand" them.
Regards,
Correction: It's beyond your understanding!
Why do people join quilting clubs or become Rotarians? Why do Minnesotans eat Jell-O with little marshmallows suspended in it?
I don't have to understand why. People simply have their own preferences.
Regards,
Are they gling to stop students from meeting?

If done right, frats can be very helpful in holding members accountable for their achievements and standing in the comminity. Not to mention that their primary purpose is networking.
