WASHINGTON — The Justice Department said it is investigating five major TV broadcast networks for potentially violating federal antitrust laws after the networks temporarily declined to provide pool coverage of President Donald Trump, a department spokesperson said.
The investigation into the networks that make up the White House TV press pool — NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN and Fox News — is underway, and the department sent out “civil investigative demands” on Friday, according to a Justice Department official.
“Members of the television press pool have boycotted covering White House events. Group boycotts among commercial competitors can violate the Sherman Act. The Antitrust Division is simply investigating to determine whether these news organizations have violated the antitrust laws,” department spokeswoman Emily Covington said Saturday.
The pool is a rotating group of networks that share the duties of recording the president’s activities during public appearances and travel. The network performing pool duty then distributes information and media, such as video footage and audio, to other outlets.
The New York Times first reported the investigation.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
ABC News said it has not received any notification from the Justice Department but expects to. Representatives for NBC, CBS and CNN declined to comment. Fox did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The investigation appears to be the latest move from the White House in its escalating feud against the press corps.
Last month, Trump barred CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House grounds, citing what he said was “their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!” The other networks in the TV pool briefly declined to participate in pool duties after CNN was removed from its spot in the rotation.

It’s great that they are getting investigated, however, I’m not sure it’s a bad thing they are boycotting. Good riddance.
The “media” in this country is nothing but a bunch of retarded little silver spoon princesses and princes with very low I.Q.s waving online college “diplomas.”
The key is proving collusion. The Left tends to have a hive mind, but the above sort of agreement would require some sort of communication. And they can't hide behind the 1st amendment--other media organizations were still providing pool coverage.
Now...lets get a Federal judge on record ruling essentially only those five major broadcast networks only are permitted first amendment protections--as if the Federal judiciary hasn't taken pains to delegitimize their role in the eyes of the public already (imho, that's a dangerous thing, long term).
You are far too nice.
They are organized evil Leftist propagandists.
It’s time for a shake up of the big media news.
Revoke their broadcast licenses. put them up for auction. Let Amazon, Apple, NVidia, ChatGPT and others take them over.
Use them to increase our bandwidth and new technologies.
SMH. Some smaller government we are getting and more freedom we are getting.
This is a “check” in the game of chess.
How do we really know the White House refused to comment if the press isn’t covering the White House?
I would like to think DOJ has better things to do. I had no idea stations were compelled to cover Trump. Putting the stations halting coverage doesn’t strike me as rising to anti-trust action.
The Justice Department should rule most of the MSM isn’t a news service it’s a propaganda agency.
You’re pretty much on target.
I can’t fathom how in the age of the internet a kid or their parents are going to put themselves in hock for a ‘’journalism degree’’.
