The California High-Speed Rail to Nowhere started out with a $9.95 billion bond measure back in 2008 that was supposed to link up LA, San Francisco and the Central Coast by 2020, and is now up to… $231 billion.

Hopefully. At this rate, it’ll cost all the money in the world and still never exist.

So where is that money going? Here’s a hint.

Around the same time that the CEO of the California High-Speed Rail Authority, was arrested on suspicion of domestic battery after an appearance with Gov. Gavin Newsom celebrating the progress of the ‘train-to-nowhere’, Democrats were moving forward a bill to ban the public from getting crucial information about the project whose budget is more than 5 times that of NASA.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

But at least someone’s been having fun.

California’s High Speed Rail Authority paid nearly $600,000 in unallowable travel expenses to “questionable locations that appear unrelated to state business,” including trips to gyms, a nightclub, an escape room, a tiki bar and a cigar lounge over a two-year period, according to an investigation released Tuesday by the inspector general that oversees the agency.

The report found that the agency routinely reimbursed consultants for trips that were unauthorized or poorly justified. Some consultants flew first-class and were reimbursed without questioning, in violation of contracts and state policies. One consultant flew his private plane from Washington, D.C. to California and was reimbursed for a premium fare.

Nothing to see here. Just business as usual.

The board that oversees the California High-Speed Rail Authority voted Friday to rein in Chief Executive Ian Choudri’s contracting authority following a state investigation that showed consultants billed the agency $600,000 in questionable travel expenses.

Just more fun from a fake government with a fake governor.

As of August 2025, $13.8 billion had been spent on the California High-Speed Rail project.

That's over a year ago, and most likely an underestimate.

And, importantly, not a single inch of track has been laid down after 18 years.

Solution from California's Dem pols?

Democrats were moving forward a bill to ban the public from getting crucial information about the project whose budget is more than 5 times that of NASA.

They've already passed the "Stop Nick Shirley Act"

California's next governor, Xavier Becerra has vowed to "finish it on time and on budget.”

California High Speed Rail was always a graft project.

Is there a good argument for high speed rail in California?
That has nothing to do with this story.

The BulletTrain was created to make a massive US-funded bucket of cash for CaCaLand politicos, like USAID.

All $$ coming into the state from the Fed (i.e., that means the other 49 states) is dumped into a common fund and spent as the politicos desire — no allegiance to earmarks associated with the Fed $$. That is how Fed $$ on WuhanFlu were spent to finance the 2020 elections.

CaCaLand citizens voted to stop this via a petition — but, a state judge said only the legislature can change shitte, citizens’ desires mean nothing.

Quit giving any $$ to the state. Tough love.

An oversight investigation of Cali’s $231 billion High Speed Rail Authority, saw some $600,000
tax dollars in non-allowable travel expenses going to “locations unrelated to state business:”
<><>trips to gyms, a nightclub, an escape room,
<><>a tiki bar and a cigar lounge——over a two-year period,
<><>the agency routinely reimbursed consultants for unauthorized trips that were falsified.
<><>”consultants” flew 1st-class and got reimbursed without question violating state policies
<><>one “conniving consultant” flew his private plane from DC to Cali
<><>the consultant falsified official documents to get reimbursed for “premium airfare.”

There isn’t, and never has been, a good argument for the feasibility of the project. Land acquisition costs in the urban centers is going to be vast. Where the land crosses into Santa Clara County at Gilroy, to San Francisco is 60-70
Miles. I’m left to guess since the Rail Authority doesn’t publish the numbers, but I’d be stunned if acquisition cost in that corridor was less than several tens of billions. It was never economically feasible, even with land prices when it was passed in 2008. But, my idiot fellow CA voters heard “green” and “choo choo”, and that’s all they needed to hear. Now that public opinion has turned against it, outlets don’t care and won’t stop the project

A perfect object lesson for anyone on the fence over the several ballot measures exhorting voters to support “investments,” “funding,” and any kind of tax under the sun.

It’s not their money, so why should they respect it?
