President Trump decided to make a diesel fuel deal with Russia after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ignored half a dozen U.S. requests to stop attacking Russian oil refineries, a U.S. official with direct knowledge told Axios.
"Zelensky is misreading the room. By continuing to hit refineries, he is eroding the good will that he has built with Trump over the last six months," the U.S. official said.
Zelensky, in an interview with Axios after the announcement, said he was blindsided by the deal, which he called "not fair and not honest" and an unwarranted gift to Putin.
Ukraine's strikes on Russian oil refineries in recent months were highly effective and caused an energy crisis in Russia.
Russia imposed a ban on diesel exports in response, which added more pressure to global diesel markets under strain from the war in Iran.
The U.S. official said Trump wanted Ukraine to unilaterally stop attacking Russian refineries because the strikes were contributing to high gas prices in America.
During eight hours of talks in Miami on Friday, Witkoff and Kushner told a Ukrainian negotiating team that the president was expected to speak to Putin and lift sanctions on Russian diesel exports.
They were told that Trump decided to move forward after Ukraine ignored multiple requests to stop strikes on Russian oil refineries, which were directly affecting U.S. consumers.
A Ukrainian official claimed that during the talks, Witkoff and Kushner threatened that Trump could cut off Ukraine from U.S. intelligence if it continued to ignore his requests.
The U.S. official denied such a threat was made...
"The attacks on the refineries cause pain in Russia, but it causes pain for the U.S., too," the U.S. official said.

Sorry, not sorry, Volodymoort. Trump looks out for America First.
Trump is looking after Trump first. His myopia extends no farther than November 4.
Z has alwys looked and behaved like n idiot, I’ve said several times here, and all I get is BooHiss for saying it. Now ow he looks even more like an idiot.
Putin is a very nasty man, but he’s a brilliant strategist.
I disagree. But even if he is looking out for Trump first, America still benefits.
No, America will not benefit; this betrayal will not win the midterm elections. The price of diesel will not come down as a result of this policy, but America will be hated by even more of the half-billion people in Europe who used to be our allies, and for a failed policy born of cheap politics and betrayal.
Long-term, America will pay, but Trump himself will not.
Okay, Eeyore.
I am so sick of reading about this rotten little thief. Every time he runs his stupid mouth I see all of the U.S. House Members waving their little Ukrainian flags as they put forth yet another bill to hand over another billion dollars of U.S. taxpayers money to his grifting rotten corrupted Joe Biden/Democrat Party money-laundering operation.
America First. Not just saving himself from the Democrats, but all of us.
Who cares what the half billion people in Europe think. They mostly dislike us anyway. America First.
Exactly
They are allies as long as we send them money and weapons.
They are certainly not our allies, or even our friends, after we send money to their enemy.
When we send money to Russia we get a product in return. When we send money to Ukraine we get a questionable IOU.
Ukraine will most certainly ramp up attacks on Russian fuel exports.
The “Big Z” (and some here) hasn’t figured out that Trump’s decisions are based on what’s good for Americans. Nathan B. seems to have turned into a TDS troll - after so many years of intelligent sounding posts. (I’m hoping the “All” includes him, because I know it’s impolite to mention someone without including them in the ping)
How many weeks have I and other Freepers been saying this?
It won’t bring prices down enough in time for the elections, but Trump looks last the elections. Can you, voter?
I hadn’t even read this when responding to 1 - dead wrong - this won’t bring prices down enough before 4 November to satisfy trolls like you - even in Trump’s post he says the vast majority is after November. Read first - it helps. Trump is focused on the American people *first* and the elections a very, very close second.
When they tried and failed several times to kill Trump he said, “they’re not coming for me, they’re coming for you and I just got in the way.” When they couldn’t get him directly they reversed tactics and went after us to get him. For the election year specifically they started when Newsom shut down well over 1/3 of diesel refinery capacity in California - starting with Phillips 66 Los Angeles in December 2025 and followed by Valero Benicia in April 2026. Careful analysis has been done - if Trump had never dropped a single bomb on Iran and crude oil prices had never changed all year, diesel would be north of $5.50 anyway. The rest is Trump. That additional buck. So, yeah, wanna be pissed at high diesel prices - be pissed - but point 2/3 of your anger at Democrats and Zelenskyy - the other 1/3 feel free to point at Trump. Now - who to vote for... hmmmm.
True that.
But with Persia and Chicoms making more money, it kinda could be long-term strategic thinking.
Hard to say at this point.
Nevertheless, 5-d chess dont matter diddly squat if Yall end up with zero troops ready for next phase of Your operation.
