The separatist Parti Québécois won Quebec’s provincial election Monday, returning to power a party that has promised another referendum on independence from Canada.
The victory by Paul St-Pierre Plamondon’s party ends eight years of rule by the Coalition Avenir Québec and puts the question of Quebec’s future in Canada back at the center of provincial politics.
St-Pierre Plamondon has pledged to hold another referendum on independence, though he has said he would wait until U.S. President Donald Trump is no longer in office.
The PQ won the most seats in Quebec’s 127-member National Assembly, the provincial legislature, but it was not yet clear whether it would reach the 64 seats needed for a majority government.
If the PQ falls short of 64 seats, it would lead a minority government and need support from opposition lawmakers to pass key legislation and survive confidence votes.
Coalition Avenir Québec leader Christine Fréchette conceded defeat, saying voters had made their choice and that she took full responsibility for the “difficult result." The CAQ, which held 79 seats before the election, was at risk of losing every seat in the legislature.

The best thing that could happen would be to cut the frogs loose.
Will separatist movements gain steam?
I think the last time Quebec voted on this, it was pretty close. But they voted down trying to secede from Canada.
A few years ago, Scotland voted fairly narrowly to remain in the United Kingdom.
Stay tuned.
Except that the elections are no longer honest even though the votes may be there.
If the US were to offer untrammeled electricity imports from Hydro-Quebec, Quebec would have no reason to stay in Canada. Right now, that's blocked because of "environmental" concerns and the fact that new hydro dams would flood "First Nations'" land.
I don’t know. A new hostile country bordering us. They are likely to be very cozy with the ChiComs.
I know a couple decent guys in north Montreal. I feel for them.
I would be happy to see Quebec splits off. It would help both sides.
What would happen with Nova Scotia? Labrador? Newfoundland?
Quebec becomes “Flyover Country.”
Quebec and all its “special needs” are the biggest drain on Canada’s federal budget.
They are subsidized mainly by Western Provinces, particularly Alberta and its oil/gas sales.
I don’t know how Quebec ever expects to make it on their own.
Awesome!
Allez Quebec!
,
Then why are they so against Quebec being independent?
The best PQ can do is form a minority government with 60 seats won.
It’s an impressive win, but a majority of those in Quebec are not in favor of another plebiscite. That could change.
Actually this was a vote against Carney and the Canadian libs as much as anything else...i have a friend in Montreal who is very pro-Trump and uber conservative. She has always voted against the Quebec separatist party in the past but she is so sick of Carney and the libs she voted in favor this time as an F-U to them...
them being Carney and the Canadas libs
