SAO PAULO/BRASILIA, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Brazilian assets rallied on Monday after right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro outperformed opinion polls to finish first in the first round of Sunday's presidential election, with the Bovespa (.BVSP), opens new tab benchmark stock index gaining more than 8% and the country's currency strengthening against the US dollar.
The eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro won 47% of the votes cast and will face leftist incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who secured about 45% of the vote, in a runoff on October 25. Polls had forecast Lula would lead the first round of voting by around three percentage points.
Investors cheered on Monday morning as Bolsonaro's strong showing was matched by gains for his allies in Congress. Analysts say a friendlier legislature would make it easier for him, if elected, to push through a pro-market agenda of tighter public spending, privatizations and tax cuts.
"Brazil wants change," Bolsonaro said on Sunday evening, heralding the "end of the era of (Lula's) Workers' Party."

Even Smartmatic couldn’t pull Luna over the line..
Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Columbia Chile, Ecuador, Venezuela, etc. Trump has made great inroads turning some of those socialist nations south of the border away from socialism and towards capitalism. Their perennial Yankee go home war cry is losing its luster down there.
Our turn is coming up in under a month! Be sure to vote! Make our wins overwhelming!
Bolsonaro won he first round, but it isn’t over yet. Stay tuned!
I traveled to and did a project in Brazil back in the day. Our Brazilian colleague kept us safe from bandits and kidnappers, even though she was a Lula supporter.
We enjoyed Brazilian barbecue several timed during our trip. Yum!!
Brazil learned from the US election in 2020 - cheat, cheat, cheat, then use corrupt judges to put the opposition party leader in jail.
Will be much harder to cheat without the “aid” of USAID
Well, there's an increasingly typical headline.
To my fellow Texans, vote early and vote often against Talarico el Sicko.
