The first round of the Brazilian presidential election takes place on Sunday. It is ostensibly between two major candidates -- the incumbent president, leftist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and on the right, Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsanaro who is currently under house arrest in poor health.

Politico seems to be portraying President Donald Trump as the real opposition to the socialist Lula. Politico's obsession with Trump in Brazil begins with the title of their Thursday story by Camille Gus, "A new Bolsonaro could pull Brazil away from Europe — and toward Trump."

Another lie.

“Trump, who endorsed Jair Bolsonaro in 2022, has not named a favorite in the race this year. But in recent weeks, diplomats and officials here have grown concerned that he might attempt to intervene in the vote.”

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2026/10/03/four-fears-frustrations-that-are-shaping-brazils-election-one-is-trump/

“Conservative leaders are winning elections across the Western Hemisphere on their own merit because everyone sees the success of President Trump’s policies,” said White House spokesperson Anna Kelly in a statement to TIME. “These claims are nonsense.”

https://time.com/article/2026/10/01/trump-brazil-election-interference-accusations-lula-bolsonaro-tensions/

“Trump has stopped short of an endorsement. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, he called Brazilians “fantastic people” and said: “It’s a very important election.”

I can do this all day. I think there should be a punishment for lies like this and it should be determined under the justice department. This act is just short of treason, and in my mind crossing over into it, by trying to subvert the office of the POTUS with false accusations.

Article III, Section 3, Clause 1:
Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.

An act to overthrow the position is no less than the person in it. The intent of the founders to see that people could be dealt with by a president as king oversteps the intent of the amendment. Can the office of the president be attacked by lies to lesson authority? Lying by itself does not carry legal blame unless it breaks a specific law or causes a distinct injury. This injures the office and it’s authority. It falls under social consequences creqating loss of trust and credibility in personal or professional relationships.

According to Black’s Law Dictionary American law handles knowing falsehoods or reckless fabrications by media organizations through tort laws governing defamation (libel for written or broadcast falsehoods, slander for spoken ones). Under constitutional standards established in cases like New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, a public official or public figure must prove “actual malice”—meaning the publisher knew the statement was false or acted with reckless disregard for the truth.

I remember people backing Lula when I visited Brazil for a project back in the day!

He’s still around!
