The flydubai hijacker was previously banned from flying by Omani authorities over concerns regarding his radical ideological views, according to a Wall Street Journal report on Friday.
The report cited several people familiar with the matter, who told the WSJ that the pilot, identified by the sources as Omani national Hamam al-Hammami, was hired by UAE-based carrier flydubai despite the concerns, though it is unclear whether the airline knew about the issue.
It is further unclear exactly what sort of radicalism Omani authorities cited as their reason for grounding the pilot, who stabbed Capt. Smit Machchhar in a failed attempt to hijack flydubai flight FZ1073 on Wednesday.
The WSJ reached out to a UAE spokesperson, who declined to comment on the matter “to avoid prejudging the outcome of the investigation or interfering with its course.”
The Omani government and flydubai did not respond to the WSJ's requests for comment.
A CNN report early on Saturday cited sources saying the pilot, an Omani citizen, was removed from flight training after a previous position at Oman Air and reassigned to a different role amid concerns over his radical views.
According to the report, the pilot was born in the UAE to Omani and Syrian parents and spent several years in the UAE, a detail CNN confirmed with an Israeli official.
The reports follow comments by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after the attempted hijacking, saying that the hijacker underwent radical Islamist indoctrination and was clearly suicidal, but that so far a motive for his actions had not been established.
In addition, sources told The Jerusalem Post on Friday that the Omani pilot holds "no other nationality," noting that pilots operating between the UAE and Israel are not required to be nationals of countries maintaining diplomatic relations with Jerusalem, according to the bilateral aviation agreement between the two countries.
The hijacker was detained by Saudi authorities following the incident aircraft's emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, and was later transferred to the UAE.
Israeli officials are expected to question the hijacker in the UAE as part of an Emirati-led investigation seeking to examine the suspect's motives and background.

Is he of the Houthi persuasion or just a “regular” Omani?
Houthis are Yemeni, not Omani
My bad....
Cant fly in Oman but he got hired pretty easily in Dubai..gee ya think maybe the fact that he was BANNED in Oman would have meant something to Dubai but apparently not
“a motive for his actions had not been established.”
I tell you, it’s a mystery. We’ll probably never know.
I suppose it would have meant something if they’d known.
"If only we could find a common factor, an 'X factor,' that ties all these cases together."
“Sources”, “reports”, “officials”, “people familiar with the situation”. The Jerusalem Post, The Wall Street Journal, CNN. Lots of words, no information.
I would hope that if Oman thought it was too risky to let this guy fly, that they would have banned him from all airport jobs. Heck, he should have been on a no-fly list as a passenger.
Question: What percentage of muslims wished he had succeeded in his mission?
Answer: The same percentage of blacks that think O.J. was set up.
From what my husband was reading, the guy was NOT EVEN A PILOT with that Dubai airline. Is this true?
Both Mossad and the UAE are known for their initial gentle interrogation techniques. That is just step one. The later steps are unpleasant. I would suspect if the interrogation has started, they already know everything.
This guy isn’t a lone wolf. He had help getting that job from people who knew him and what he was willing to do. Everyone involved in getting him into that cockpit are trying to cover their tracks now.
“The somebody did something” reporting continues, scouring mainstream for the word “highjack”—not there
The Omani co-pilot accused of attacking the captain aboard a Flydubai flight to Israel on September 30 attempted to carry out a “terrorist” attack, the United Arab Emirates prosecutor general said Saturday. The alleged assailant, identified as Omani national Hamam al-Hammami, had been barred from flying in his country due to his radical ideological views, several media reported.
This is typical of any organization that has so much as “toyed” with woke or DEI — and then encountered any objections. They acknowledge the objections, put the person on Admin leave (paid) and then wait until y’all forget about it. Then, they put him back on staff and proceed according to the original plan.
Accept no “pending investigation”. Go to public meetings and identify the politico/bureaucrat who is tied by name to the offending person. And, ask during each meeting.
If you give up, you are the problem.
