Bern, 18.09.2026 — Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, hybrid threats and critical dependencies pose challenges for the state, the economy and society. With the 2026 Security Policy Strategy, the Federal Council is positioning Switzerland to navigate this environment. The strategic priorities for the coming years are to strengthen resilience, improve capabilities for resistance and protection, and strengthen defence capabilities. On 18 September, the Federal Council took note of the results of the consultation process and approved the Security Policy Strategy. Work has already begun on implementing its 10 objectives and 46 measures.

The international security situation has become increasingly unstable and volatile. Rivalries between major powers have intensified, and armed conflicts are increasingly shaping the global environment. The international order is becoming progressively weaker. There is still no end in sight to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. At the same time, hybrid threats such as cyberattacks and influence activities are on the rise. Critical infrastructure is made more vulnerable by its high level of interconnectivity. It is also vital to safeguard domestic security and mitigate risks posed by natural hazards and pandemics.

Even when Hitler was on a roll, he chose not to invade Switzerland. So I doubt if Russia (or any other nation) is a threat to Switzerland.

On the other hand, Switzerland is now around 6% Muslim, and rising. That’s where the real threat is.

Oops, sorry. It’s politically incorrect to consider that. So let’s all go back to worrying about Russian troops scaling the Alps.

If anyone is curious about why Europe is preparing for Russian aggression even though the Russian and North korean forces are tied down currently in Ukraine, it is because the threat being prepared for is seen as in the near future of 5 or 7 years from now, they do not really expect serious invasion forces right now, or next year, but in the near distance after Russian recovery from its current invasion.

Switzerland is an army that is a country, they stay safe by keeping ready, they anticipate and prepare, they are always ahead of the threat of an enemy and this is just a part of that.

Thanks for the replies. I sure can see the Baltic States, Poland, etc. being concerned about Russian aggression. But Switzerland?

Seems more like virtue signaling than anything else.

Out of curiosity, I just looked it up. Switzerland is not part of NATO or the EU. They should probably stay that way. Calm and prepared, but strictly neutral.

This latest Russian invasion has triggered Switzerland to look at joining NATO, but for military readiness, Switzerland takes it very seriously, preset places on bridges built in for blowing them if needed, shopping center parking lots required to be able to double as landing strips, hidden artillery bunkers already built into the picturesque mountain passes, home and building construction required to include serious nuclear bunkers officially rated for blast resistance, a fully military trained male population, underneath the pastoral Swiss surface it is an army inside of a mountain fortress.
