Donald Trump brutally mocks Britain over Falkland Islands - 'UK won't travel that far'

Donald Trump said he could “settle” any conflict over the Falkland Islands, describing a war between the UK and Argentina as a “potential disaster." The US president previously hinted that he might not back the UK’s sovereignty over the Falklands if Argentina launched an attack. Speaking to the press while sitting with Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin during his two-day visit to Ireland, Trump mocked the UK, saying it would not “be willing to travel that far” if Argentina invaded the Falklands as it did in 1982.

Trump said: "Well, the Falkland Islands is very interesting because here we go again. I remember as a young boy, a pretty young boy anyway, but the Falkland Islands, and I think it was a different country at that time, the UK a little bit, but they went in and they took it over. "I’m not sure they’re doing that. They have a little problem with immigration. They have a little problem with energy and then have some other problems they have to take care of. So, I don’t know. You know, I don’t know if they’re going to be willing to travel that far.

"That is very far away. You’re talking about weeks by boat. I don’t know. I’m sure I’ll be called into that potential disaster, but if they do, I’ll probably be able to settle, settle it out. But right now, you have two countries that are not happy concerning the Falklands."

The US president's comments come amid renewed tension over the islands. Last week, Javier Milei, Argentina's president stepped up the country's claim to the South Atlantic archipelago.

I love 97% of the things that DJT does...and 87% of the things he says. But this isn't one of them. Even though Britain is currently ruled by Maoists he should be a bit more diplomatic when talking about historic allies.

And we all know the definition of "diplomacy"...it's the art of telling someone to go to hell in a way that makes him look forward to the trip.

Well, Trump is right in that the UK can no longer project power anywhere, to the Falkland Islands or to anywhere else.

But… the British defenses there are more robust than they were in 1982. From what I’ve read, the advantage goes to the UK as of now.

For now...

By 2030? Nah.

The UK hasn't been exactly helpful against Iran.

Plus, they simply don't have the navy to get there if they had to.

Mr. President, Falklanders overwhelmingly want to remain in the UK and you have enough on your plate. So, yea.

If there’s a big pile of it laying around, most people avoid it. Trump runs and jumps up and down in it.

When they had an election over this issue in the Falklands some years ago, 3 voters chose Argentina over the UK. I suspect if the vote were held again today the results would shift a little, but probably still 90-99% pro-UK. But if Argentina and its leaders hold to free market principles and freedom and the UK keeps on its current course, I could see this preference becoming an open question in 5 or 10 years, and if the day comes when the islanders favor Argentina I suspect we’ll see Argentina press their claim harder.

Do you mean that the Falklands can defend itself against Argentina? I think that Trump is saying that the UK cannot do anything.

Britain is a no brainer ............The muslims have taken over and they will soon retract into a third world country. Their beautiful culture is lost forever.

They don't have long-range bombers now.   Parliament would not allow the funding for war against Argentina over the Falkland Islands.

Britain should send their Muslim immigrants to the Falklands, perhaps using three-master sailing ships.

And Argentina doesn’t have the navy to take it. Bot have hollowed out their militaries since then. But Argentina is by far worse off than the UK.

From what I’ve read, yes. A small RAF squadron is based there. Those planes are better than anything Argentina has now. So the UK will probably have air superiority.

Plus there’s a military garrison of around 1500 men there.

Yet MinorityRepublican has a point. Argentina is expecting a delivery of F-16 fighter jets from Denmark. That will eventually shift things to Argentina’s favor.
