A Cook County judge is facing harsh criticism from the Cook County Sheriff and the teamsters union that represents deputies and jailers.

*snip*

[Judge] Lyke held them in contempt after they would not comply with his order to unshackle an inmate so he could hug a family member present in the courtroom.

That inmate has a track record of being dangerous and unpredictable.

Also from the article:

“After a contentious exchange in the courtroom, the two deputies were placed in custody for close to an hour and were let go only after apologizing to Lyke.”

Trash judge, obviously. I also wonder about the deputies who placed the above two in custody. That might have been a good time for them to catch a case of the “blue flu”.

What is the county court rule on the matter?

I’m sorry, but I don’t understand the question.

Do you mean does the judge have the power to do what he did? I think so. Judges are the absolute masters of their courtrooms.

But that’s only half the story. Might doesn’t always mean right. A judicial oversight board can, and should, slap this judge down hard.

But, hey. It’s Cook County, Illinois. So this judge might instead get a civil rights award for what he did.

Removal of restraints only with supervisor approval. The guy was considered high risk. They were trying to reach the supervisor by phone when the judge detained them. Complete “respect ma authori-tay” moment. I’ve seen moments like this in my corrections career. The guidance from the union was “get it in writing, and get witnesses” in case the administrator in question tried to deny it later. I had to do something like that once. I followed the union’s advice and it saved my ass.

Unions are corrupt, as you’d probably agree. But they are (usually) very good on safety issues. I saw that from a few years working in a rolling mill.

This judge seems to want all policemen killed or at least wounded. He had already once criticized for letting a perp go who later killed a policeman and wounded another
