A Russian disinformation campaign is doctoring celebrity videos to meddle in the midterms – MSNBC
The Kremlin-backed operation, known as Matryoshka, has Hollywood actors telling voters to disavow the Democratic Party and vote Republican
MSNBC (MSNOW/Whatever) found some fake videos of actors attacking Democrats. None of the videos seem to actually promote voting for Republicans.
With the advent of AI, it doesn’t take that much ability to produce something like this. AI voice cloning and video fakes are widely available. Maybe this came out of Russia, but it could just as easily have come out of some teenager’s overpowered gaming PC. Apart from Julie Roberts and Sarah Jessica Parker, the choice of actors is on the obscure side, and as MSWhatever admits, no one previously even saw the videos.
The videos are all branded with unauthorized CNN logos in the top left corner and push viewers to share the clips and join the #AllDemocratsAreCriminals campaign. The campaign hasn’t gone viral; the most popular posts garner just dozens of interactions and were first flagged by @antibot4navalny, an anonymous group of analysts tracking Russia-related influence operations.
Dozens of interactions. Dozens. Really gonna tilt some midterms there.

What the Russians were trying to do was use their garbage to reach people on the far left and the far right who were naturally skeptical of establishment politics, and then start manipulating them and pushing the political agendas that they actually cared about, e.g. Ukraine. Much like the Nigerian spam, this stuff is deliberately targeted at stupid people who would believe that Hollywood celebs are making videos calling Democrats ‘blood-drinking demons’. But that’s exactly the audience they’re looking for, not to influence elections, but to use as propaganda vectors.
MS knows this. Multiple congressional reports have gone into it. And yet the media just can’t help themselves. After all, Russiagate was the high point for political targeting of opponents and mass censorship of the internet. And that’s a lot scarier than a Julia Roberts video.

So when it was against President Trump they pushed the narrative and still cannot admit it was fake, but now when it is against democrats they are all over how fake it is?
