IAEA says nuclear watchdog has observed construction at Iran’s Pickaxe Mountain

The International Atomic Energy Agency tells the Bloomberg news outlet that it has observed construction activity at Pickaxe Mountain in Iran, which Western intelligence has flagged as a likely site meant to store nuclear material.

“There are some indications that there is movement around this construction site,” says IAEA director general Rafael Grossi. “We don’t have any concrete information as to activities that may be taking place there.”

The UN nuclear watchdog has not sent inspectors inside the underground complex, which is at Natanz, but is relying on remote imagery, Grossi tells the outlet.

“They said at the time, ‘We are going to put everything in tunnels, inside a mountain,'” Grossi says. “This was going to be impermeable and protected from attacks.”

Since Israel and the US struck Iran’s nuclear sites during the 12-day war in June 2025, Iran hasn’t given IAEA inspectors access to nuclear sites that were affected by the strikes. The IAEA also has been unable to verify the status of Iran’s stockpile of near weapons-grade uranium since the June bombing.

Yesterday, US President Donald Trump said the United States may hit Pickaxe Mountain, urging Tehran to be cautious: “We notice there’s a little activity at Pickaxe. I would advise Iran not to get cute because we will have to hit them very hard,” Trump said in a speech at the midterm Republican convention.

Can’t believe we have not declared that a no-go zone controlled by cluster munitions or scattered proximity mines.

The more the IRGC expends itself on its nuclear program, the easier it will be to take down in the end.

They’re not going to roll over and give up and the US is not going to put boots on the ground in Iran at this point in time. What we are seeing now is just the 2026 of kicking the can down the road.

Well, obviously the events of 2/28/26 have made acquisition of nuclear weapons existential for Iran, where it was not before, so I imagine we will be hearing of further developments or a test in the not too distant future.

At this point, why doesn’t Trump just obliterate Pickaxe Mountain?

When a iranian tells you something, never, ever buy into it. They admit and have been observed using the space to construct centrifuges and will not let the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) in for a look. If it walks like a duck, quacks...

And this isn’t the only site that is being used:

Parchin Military Complex
The “Rainbow Site”
Natanz
Fordow
Isfahan

All these are active nuclear use and are suspected of trying to be used to build weapons grade uranium.

Why not let them invest more time and money and energy, then destroy it?

Probably because he can’t.

Yeah, big big mountain. Can’t take it out easily with anything but mid-sized nuclear devices, most likely 3 detonated in sequence.

Leveling Tehran would be easier. And by the time this is all over may be the best option.
