BERLIN, Sept 6 (Reuters) - The Alternative for Germany (AfD) surged into first place in state elections in Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday, exit polls showed, putting a far-right party on the cusp of power at state level for the first time since World War Two. The AfD won 44.5% of the vote, with Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s conservatives trailing well behind on 18.5%, and the centre-left Social Democrats and environmental Greens both clearing the minimum threshold to enter parliament, according to an exit poll from the ARD broadcaster.

Ho many elections will they have to win before they are no longer “far” right?
It is possible under German law for members seated by another party to switch party affiliation or drop it altogether and retain their seat.
It's also possible that if 2 parliamentary votes fail to form a government, the largest party can form its own, although how they would get any legislation through is unclear.
The most surprsing thing is the collapse of the CDU, which lost almost half its votes, and the rise of the BSW (Sara Wagenknecht) party, which rose to 4.8% and the Greens who -gained- 2.8%.
Although BSW did not make the 5% cut-off for representation, the percentages show that the center is collapsing, with votes shifting to the Afd and the leftist parties.
The comparison of the AfD socialist state controlled economy of the Nazis is inherently false:
The AfD was literally founded in 2013 by free-market economists who were angry about EU bailouts, and its economic platform is explicitly neoliberal:
Core economic positions:
Deregulation and de-bureaucracy
Abolish inheritance and wealth taxes; cap income tax at 25%
Reduce or eliminate state subsidies
Cut social insurance spending
“Any form of state-directed economy will sooner or later end in misallocation and corruption” — their own program
Oppose EU economic intervention and bailouts

Party, which wins around half of the vote is not by definition “far” right.

They need 50% +1 seats in the parliament. It looks close.
Otherwise, the supposedly right CDU has aligned themselves even with the communists, to keep them out of power.
I would peg it more as pseudo libertarian than “right”.

Surprised they haven’t OUTLAWED the party yet, so I’ll give Germany credit there as it will get much harder to outlaw them now that their strength is proven, at least in that part of Germany.
a slight correction: CDU has declared both AfD and the Left Party as verboten. True, CDU has tap danced with regard to the Left Party to keep AfD out of a couple state legislatures. So, your point is essentially correct.
Correctomundo. In Poland, the equivalent parties (libertarian and right-populist) formed the confederation in the last election. I love that country. Four of the five largest parties are (1) the Civic Union (kind of like our Republican Party), (2) Law and Justice (kind of a conservative party), (3) the People’s Party (an agrarian or rural conservative party) and (4) the Confederation. Their Prime Minister is decent fellow, kind of like our Speaker of the House, and their President is a real patriot (also an academic). They spend 3.5% of GDP on defense and - in addition to the professional army - they have a regional defense force.
Early results before: looks like the leftist BSW cleared the 5% hurdle, so the Landtag will have Afd, CDU, SPD, Greens, and BSW. CDU lost almost half its voters. CDU weakness + BSW makes it more likely someone from CDU will jump ship. The CDU could also throw out its current leadership and ally with AfD.
