Amajor Tehran theater production has dropped a prominent actor after his support for Palestine triggered fierce backlash, exposing a rare reversal where a stance strongly backed by the Islamic Republic appears to have become a liability with the public.
Navid Mohammadzadeh, one of Iran’s most prominent film and theater actors, was removed Monday from the cast of the theater-orchestral production “Arash,” according to a statement from the production team.
The producers cited “multiple controversies,” unspecified personal problems and, unusually, “the lack of audience interest in him” as reasons for the decision, saying a replacement would be announced soon.
The wording was striking in a country where support for Palestine has been promoted for decades as a foundational political and ideological cause, while expressions of sympathy for Israel can carry legal consequences.
Mohammadzadeh had drawn a wave of criticism on social media about two weeks earlier after posting an image of himself wearing clothing bearing the Palestinian flag. He responded with a video in which he made clear that his position went beyond concern for Palestinian civilians.

Glad to hear I’m not the only one that doesn’t want political words from an actor. He learned the Jelly Roll lesson.
The subtle politics of these are immense.
In short, the average Iranian blames the Gazans inprovident 10/7 attack for the Hell that has rained down on Iran.
Long term, that means Hezbollah and Hamas no longer can count on Iran to be their sugar daddy.
Why does that surprise you? Or did you forget the “ /s “ tag?
I’ll be charitable and blame it on our crap school system and even more crap media. Although, I do recall some years back a documentary about repression of actors and artists in Iran. Might have been PBS (it’s not ALL bad), but I’m not sure.
I appreciate you boiling it all down. I more clearly understand the Iranian perspective.
Maybe he supported the wrong terrorists in the Suni-Shiah hatred for each other.
Theater-goers aren’t supporters of regime.
I’ve seen a few Iranian movies, and to the extent they hold political content, they are anti-mullah. Last year’s “It Was Just an Accident” addresses victims of torture seeking revenge on the perpetrator. (It was banned in the country but smuggled out.) It’s a great film.
I’ve understood that Muslims hate Palestinians more than anyone else.
That “Palestinian” is a complex, untranslatable term somewhere between lepers, slaves and trash.

I don’t know about “Muslims” writ large.
But the Arabs in Gaza (now called Palestinians—that used to be what Jews were called until the 1970s with a media rebranding) are the lowest caste Arabs and were the refuse kicked out of slums in various Arab areas, notably Egypt.
Basically just the criminal and migrant worker demographic who went to Israel to find work.
They’re despised due to being low class, stupid, criminals.
