More than 100 companies sign open letter sounding alarm on AI cybersecurity
Yahoo Tech ^ | August 29th, 2026 | Dan Thorp-Lancaster

More than 100 companies have signed onto an open letter calling for greater cooperation and preparation of cyber defenses across governments and other institutions. The signatories include tech giants like OpenAI, Anthropic and Microsoft, along with financial institutions, telecoms and more. The call comes as the growing capabilities of AI models lower the barrier for hackers to be able to cause disruption with critical infrastructure, important organizations and companies.

"In the coming months, AI-enabled cyber attacks will become far more widespread and sophisticated as models around the world become increasingly capable," the letter says. "The companies and public services our communities depend on—from hospitals to water treatment plants to the infrastructure that powers the internet—are at risk."

AI is like atomic fission and fusion. It has enormous capability to do good and it also can also produce a horrific weapon.

The United States must become the world leader in this technology to both secure our economic and technological future and to be at the cutting edge of the use of AI for both offensive and defensive cyber attack capabilities.

It's not like we have any choice in the matter because our adversaries are pushing forward as fast as possible to exploit the military and cyber warfare aspects of AI to use against us.

The Genie is out of the bottle and we cannot put it back.

The best we can do is maintain technical dominance to shape the development of AI in a positive direction favorable to the United States and to develop strong AI offensive and defensive technology against cyber attacks and high tech AI based smart weapons.

We are seeing in the Persian Gulf how even comparatively dumb semi autonomous drones not much more sophisticated than WWII vintage V1 rockets can provide a very effective destructive chaos

One inevitable feature of AI is going to be real time cyber space cyber warfare attacks and defense systems for both military, financial and commercial applications. These cyber defense systems are going to need to physically in close proximity to existing computer systems because the attacks and defense occur so fast that the physical transmit time between CPU and comms networks becomes a highly significant factor.

This is not something you can do remotely from severs in India which is why the development of US based infrastructure proximate (or ideally integral) to the sites they protect is so critical

With current technology, this means dedicated high speed data centers

It is also the reason our adversaries like China are pulling out the stops on neo Luddite psyop propaganda. political pressure and direct action, Antifa style resistance, to kill US data center construction and AI tech development in general.

“It is also the reason our adversaries like China are pulling out the stops on neo Luddite psyop propaganda.”

Bears repeating. China wants to have the AI advantage.

“””The call comes as the growing capabilities of AI models lower the barrier for hackers to be able to cause disruption with critical infrastructure,”””

So the creators of AI are warning everyone that their creation will make it easier for hackers to cause problems.

It looks to me that AI will become the FULL EMPLOYMENT ACT for the computer techies to fix computer systems everywhere to prevent AI hackers.

Next target for the hackers will be the municipal sewer system.

Get ready for the sewer backup into your home.

Scraping the internet is the process of extracting data from websites using a computer program.

I asked Grok about "scraping the internet" without taking into account private and proprietary products.

Grok admitted that this an "issue" but it still does it.

AI technology is uniquely differentiated from atomic technology because it is very difficult for non state actors to acquire the technology and use it .

AI is accessible not just to governments but also to non state actors with the resources to pursue the technology. In some cases, nimble and smart non state actors may actually have some advantages.

The "military industrial complex" mechanism has always been to stand up our enemies with current weapons so that we have to come to them to develop new weaponry for our defense. Meanwhile we must use up stocks of obsolete weaponry, else it must be maintained at high cost. That prompts more enemies.

Rinse and repeat. It's been the human condition since Tubalcain first made swords.

...pulling out the stops on neo Luddite psyop propaganda.

So what is my category for being slandered now? "Neo Luddite"? Never heard of it so far until this thread.

I don't feel insulted when I call myself a Luddite. I'm the one who has never downloaded a song and who has a landline phone in my kitchen. Haven't activated my Samsung smart TV to let the camera record my frowns and smiles about TV content. Have no smartphone, just a minute burner phone like criminals use.

But the neo thing is new.
